Hi Everyone, I need some help with a Spy Hunter game. The game plays fine and all game sounds are present except for the backround noise. If I run it through the tests all sounds and both sides of the amp seem fine, I have my tones on both sides. This happend when I set the dip switch to turn attract sound off. Before that it worked. I had a spare sound board that I swapped with and that didn't help. I do have a spare non-working main board I can rob from if someone can tell me where to look,Thanks

What do you mean by all game sounds are present except for the background noise?

Do you mean the Peter Gunn theme doesn't play during the game?

I have all game sounds ( guns, oil slick, etc) except the backround music. The music that would play in attract mode. Thats what I am missing,Thanks

That music is produced by the Cheap squeak board located on the upper left side, looking in the back door. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in again. The red button on it resets it and makes it play the song. There's also a dip switch that makes I play in attract.

Thanks for the note. The led blinks on it but the red button doesn't reset it. I will look for another one. Thanks

The Peter Gunn music failing is a common Spy Hunter problem.

Some things to troubleshoot or check:
- Volume knob (there are 2, one for sound, one for music)

- Audio amp (probably not your problem since you get other sounds, you could try swapping channels to see if one is blown)

- Cheap Squeak PCB (This is the most likely problem). The LED tells a lot (check the manual or search threads here). If the LED is operating correctly and you hear no sound, then it's probably the DAC chip (most common problem). Otherwise, there is some other problem with the Cheap Squeak. (Maybe it's a simple voltage problem).

There is a lot of information about this problem. Do some searching and reading.

Good luck

Weird.... So if you run your finger on some of the components towards the top of the cheap squeak board, do you hear loud scratching and interference coming out? If you touch several components at the top middle area and don't hear a peep, I think there's problems on that board. Could be the MC3340 IC (don't remember position, but it's in the center top section), or the DAC (U10) AD7533JN on the far right looking at the board head on. Usually when a DAC fails it is grumbly crap sound. The MC3340 is relative to volume level, so if it failed, then you would hear nothing I presume. Or like previously mentioned, the volume pot is bad or a wire is open. 2 channel amp could have something. I don't remember if one side is for effects and one is for peter gunn, or if it's both in stereo... Could hook up a small speaker to the ouput cheap squeak signal and see if you hear something.
