Spy Hunter will only go to the right.

Hello, I am posting my next Spy Hunter problem now in this section. Previously, it was a monitor issue, now that I have a somewhat working monitor I found that I can not control the Spy Hunter car. It will only go right and drive in the trees. You can not turn left, the car itself does not turn left either, you can see it turn right when you turn the wheel in that direction. I had a similar issue with my Tron that the Tron control would not go left. I found a loose connection in the main Tron pcb terminal. The Tron was a little easier to troubleshoot since it was not too difficult to follow the lead for going left. On Spy Hunter it is a steering wheel with many wires. Not sure where to look or what to check.

This is a nice looking cabinet I bought not working along with a ruff shape, but mostly complete second cabinet. I purchased a working PCB from CDJump and have it installed in this good cabinet. Could this just be a calibration issue? When I had this same PCB installed in the ruff cabinet it could steer fine. So that is why I did not think it was a calibration issue. The control panel on the ruff cab has stuck thumb buttons and is not as nice, so I did not want to just swap out the control panels.

Here are some blurry pictures of me driving in the trees, did not realize you could go so far in the trees and bushes in Spy Hunter!

Any suggestions on where to check next?

On most driving games u can pull the steering unit from the cab with a few screws to remove. Check the steering pot for movement. Most games allow you to recalibrate them. All my driving games i own do for the wheel and gas/ brake pedals. Thats what it seems to me. Put it in test mode first to see what it does.

I would start by going to the calibration screen and seeing what that buys you.

You may have to adjust/replace your steering wheel POT or it could be a wiring issue. You could also try swapping the absolute position board from the other cabinet into this one and seeing if that helps.

You have the advantage of having a known good working boardset from an MCR guru so that helps a lot.

Thanks for the input. I will try calibration first, and then work my way down the line.

Yes regarding CDJump. I tried fixing my broken pcb, and gave up. I should of just saved the time and went to CDJump sooner.

You can put DMM leads on the pot and see the voltage drop off from it as you turn it -- it should be smooth and linear.

Whatever the steering problem is, it should be pretty straightforward given where you're at now.

I would also try reseating the connectors to the SSIO PCB, and the Absolute Position PCB. You may even want to reheat/reflow the solder on those.

probably the abs. pos. pcb, or the wiring to it. Its fairly easy to swap the abs. pos. pcb from one to the other cab and see if the problem follows the pcb (abs pos problem) or stays with the cab (wiring problem).

I was able to do some more testing on the Spy Hunter. When I go into test mode, and check all the inputs, the steering starts registering to the right as you press the gas pedal down. As you let up on the petal, it starts going back to center. I calibrated the steering wheel and it still did the same thing after calibration. I swapped out the Absolute Position Board and it made no difference.

I was able to make it playable by calibrating the steering wheel to the right so when you press the gas pedal all the way down in would go to center.

Does anyone know why the gas pedal would affect the steering wheel like that?

the pedal always makes the steering shift a bit, that's perfectly normal. Not turning left is not. I'd check the connectors on the ab pos pcb. Mine had a similar issue - bad idc connector.

Given that you had a spare abs pos board and your mcr boardset is known good it's almost got to be a connector/connection issue...

Mine had that behavior once, and it was fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting everything associated with the pedal/wheel/absolute position board. Also, I'm not sure what would happen if someone replaced the pots and hooked them up wrong. That might be worth verifying.

If the pots are blue they are original.

Sorry, where are the pots you are speaking of? Not sure what I need to check on that.
Pots = potentiometer = variable resistor. This is the device with a shaft that connects to the wheel/pedal and has three wires coming out of it, which converts the movement of the wheel/pedal into a change in resistance.
