My Spy Hunter weapons van button didn't work so I pulled it apart and found the light burnt out and the housing slightly disconnected from the rest of the unit. Unfortunately while working on it I turned it on to see if I could signal the van and let the bottom wires touch the steering column and now none of the lights, missiles, oil slick, smoke screen, or machine guns work. Any thought on what could be up?

Working – Dig Dug, Spy Hunter, Skee Ball

Thanks, I will check that when I get home. Any chance it could have screwed up the lamp driver or pcb board?

lets check the fuses first, then go from there
there is a chance of anything and vegas will put odds on it lol

Just checked the power brick and all fuses are fine. I was hoping that would be it--easy fix, but no so. Where to next?

On the lamp driver card I would check
on J2
5 and 6 is 12 volts going to the lights

Pin 1 is 12 volts into the card

see if those are there

should be 12 volts at the lights then the lamp driver provides grounds to turn them on
since each light has its own ground, seems to be a power problem

if you need a new lamp driver then look here (15 bucks UNTESTED)

Well Pin 1 did show 12 volts going into the card but pins 5 and 6 show only show about 1.8 volts.

i'd pull the lamp driver, and look and see if i saw any burnt resistors or traces.
12v from the input is routed to pins 5 and 6 through r19. Check the traces and the resistor, chances are you burnt a trace up when you shorted it out.
Just find the burnt spot, scrape the covering off the trace, and use a piece of paper clip and solder it to both sides of the burnt trace and you should be good to go.
Edit - also check the connector, they're notorious for making connections some of the time.

I pulled the board and sure enough r19 was burnt on the outside. I did as you said and soldered a paper clip to both sides and now my weapons lights are working again. YEAH!

THANKS, CDJump and GJINC!!! You both were dead on.

i didn't mean to replace the resistor with a jumper. The resistor is there to limit the current, in case you short it out again. Its fine to test it that way, but i'd recommend replacing the resistor with the correct one, if that's what actually burnt up.
you need a 2.2 ohm, 1 watt resistor. Well, if i couldn't find a 2.2 ohm 1w, i'd look for a 3 ohm 1 watt (or 2 watt, or 5 watt - as long as the wattage is 1w or higher). A 3 ohm would make the lights slightly dimmer, which isn't a bad thing, as the bulbs tend to get hot and flake the glass over time.

I got what you were saying and was looking to replace it as soon as I could get down to a electronic specialty shop that should have resistors. Thanks again for dissecting the issue. One other thing, my gas pedal is was getting stuck so I pulled it out and it looks like the gears are pretty worn after many years of use. Is there anyway to get a replacement gears or even the unit?

i've never seen replacement gears. I'd lube everything up good, and i bet it works fine. Worst case is to replace the spring with a stiffer one. What usually wears out is the pot that the small gear is attached to.
The small gear is attached to the pot with a roll pin. You drive the pin out, and reinstall the gear on a new pot after drilling a new hole for the roll pin.
most likely the pot is wore out and the gear isn't making good connection.
I believe the pot is a 10k 360 deg. pot. Once upon a time i had a part number from jameco or mouser one. Its probably in a thread somewhere, but, the 10k linear pots that radio shack sell with the super long shaft works fine for home use, but probably won't last as long as the original pot (but its about 1/3 the cost).

Mylstar has replacement gears I believe.

And the 1K pot works great too from Mouser.

I posted the exact part number from Mouser that I put in mine in Frizz's thread about 2 months ago and it can be found there.

Or if you catch me in a less lazy moment I can go find my remaining spare pots and tell you.

Thanks, upon both your suggestions I found the pot was binding up, don't ask me how, but it was grinding inside it somehow. I looked up past posts and ordered a new pot from mouser and for anyone's info it was 360 deg 1k linear pot number 882-eup1125-1k. When that arrives I will put the cog on it. It might be self explanatory once I see the pot but on the pot there are three wires, how do I know which is which? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I also am missing the Peter Gunn theme which I hope is the Cheap Squeak Deluxe board. Guns, smoke, and speed and other sounds work fine it is just the killer soundtrack i am missing. I bought a tested board from Quarterarcade which should be here today or tomorrow. I will let you know if that solves my sound issues.

When the pot comes in and you're ready to install it, let me know and I'll open up my game and take a picture of my pot (same one as you just ordered since you found my post with the part # in it) with the wires attached to it.

Still waiting for the pot to show up so I can fix the gas pedal, but today the cheap squeak deluxe board showed up, so I put that in and went to sounds in the test mode and it played the Peter Gunn theme nice and clear. Since then it won't play it in when I return to the test mode for sounds or when it is in attract mode, nor when i start a game. If I recall right it should play the track once upon starting a new game. Any thoughts on what to test or look for?

The fact that it worked when first plugged in and no longer works doesn't sound good. I hope nothing damaged the card.

It should play the PG theme when you enter the audio test screen, before you've chosen any options.

Do the rest of your audio tests work okay? You still have all the other sounds?

What does the LED on the cheap squeak board do when the game is first powered on?

Boy, I hope nothing happened to the new card, that was $70 quick bucks if so. All other sounds work fine, the green led on the board flashes a quick three or four times then stays lit. I put back in the old cheap squeak deluxe and when I push the reset button it faintly plays the tune in a crackly way, the new board does nothing when the reset is pressed.

I think the light is supposed to come on, flash a few times and then go off.

Sounds like it might be a board problem? Or something took the card out??? Have you checked the voltages to the card?
