I have a Spy HUnter Cockpit there the steering rolls all the way to the left only. It used to roll all the way to the right. Is this just a potentiometer issue? If so, what exactly is the part I need? Anyone else have any ideas? All wires are there and intact

What kind of values do you see in diagnostic mode as you turn left and right and when it's centered? And are you getting smooth movement in the values? Is it possible that the calibration is screwed up and "straight" is all the way to the right? Maybe it just needs to be recalibrated.

Well, that would help if I could even get it into Test Menu. wires are broken off near there but I can't find the correct test menu button even when rigged...the Spy Hunter upright I have does not have a recalibration option in the test menu, it would show where the steering would be but how could you recalibrate it in the first place?

There's a calibration option in the menu for both the steering wheel and gas pedal.

And you can test your pot with a DMM. If you see a smooth progression of voltages returned from it as you turn it then it's good.

could be a pot but IIRC that also sounds like symptoms of an issue with the global positioning board or whatever it's called.

Absolute position board.

OP, did this game ever work correctly for you? Or was it always messed up?

i just fixed this same thing...

There are three wires to the back of the pot... one for left one for right... one center (ground) if either of these is disconnected the game will think the steering is hard (8) that way... I opened if up and bam, wire off... solder and works fine... Now two weeks ago I fixed it a little differently... it was the location of the pot this time... the pot is gear drivin and someone cranked the steering so hard that the pot slipped at the gear... I was able to gently raise (bend) the pot above the gear and rotate it to center using the test screen... then bend it back inline with the gear... you cant calibrate the steering like you can say a light gun but it will tell you the value (1-8) of the pot... ie left 4, right 6... 0 center. Hope this helps you out. Open it up and have fun... might want to get those test screen wires connected but you shouldnt need them, youll just need to trial and error it a bit...

..upright...

Just reread and noticed you were talking about the cockpit version... I was talking about upright but the steering may be the same... good luck

Life is a lot simpler if you calibrate the pots in the game but you can manually adjust through trial and error as well. Just not sure why you would when the former is a lot simpler.

fixed it again...

funny I walked into work this morning and the steering was out on my Spy Hunter... it was the gear again this time... I think people think if they turn real hard and practically rip the steering wheel off that they will not die... nope you are still gonna die and then the game is broke.... it is fun seeing people getting so into to playing though, if anyone knows where to get some steering springs let me know, I would like to find some NOS springs instead of trying to find something at the hardware store...

Mylstar had a few NOS springs the last time I talked to him.

I've found some at the HW store that are pretty good as replacements as well.
