Any ideas on where to find these? The steering springs go into these, which go into the steel plate. I guess the grommets protect the steel from wearing.

Ace has them in their bins in the hardwar isle.

Are the grommets plastic or metal?

I looked for these a while back and couldn't find them.

OK, I remember now.

The problem with them is that the springs tear through them and just go to work on the metal plate -- and eventually tear through those too. Almost every SH I've seen has this issue.

I was looking unsuccessfully for metal ones back when I did this.

Yep. That's where we're at. It's getting too close for comfort. I'll have to check out Ace.

If you find any metal ones please let me know. :)

In the meantime you can probably rotate your plastic ones to put the pressure on a different spot.

mine were completely missing, and the hole completely wore through. I just drilled a small hole beside the original one that i hooked new springs to (on both sides).

Mine too. And those were ripped through as well.

It really seems to be a cycle of self-destruction. Wish I could find some metal grommets that would hold up and distribute the force of the springs over a wider area.

I just went and looked at my SH - with very little effort (but opening the hole up just s smidge)

you could use this setup -

1/8" npt nipples

and
1/8" npt brass nuts

Cut a short piece of the nipple, with a nut on top and bottom and you should be good to go.

I got these at Ace Hardware. They aren't perfect, but they do the trick, and they're much better than nothing. They're $.30 each.

If anyone wants some, let me know. I don't mind getting more and mailing them off. I won't bother asking for payment, unless I get a bunch of orders and it starts running into money.

Did you get a part number, by chance?
