I'm working on several Spy Hunter CPU boards. On all but one the CPU ROMs dated 12/5/83 the other is dated 2/9/84. I checked them against each other and they are different. I haven't compared them to the MAME set. These are the CPU PG0 - PG5 ROMs. All the other ROMs are the same. Does anyone know the difference?

I don't know the answer but please keep us posted. If I've got the older roms I might want to give these a try. And if they're not in mame for some reason then it would be cool if you were willing to share them.

Any update on this? I tried to install Free Play ROMs on my Spy Hunter, but they didn't work. My ROMs are labeled 2/9/84, and MAME only shows one ROM set (no details on date)... so if there are actually two sets, and the '83 ROMs are in MAME, I guess that's probably why the patch didn't work.

I'll pull my board again when I get a chance, but just wondering if anyone ever looked into this more closely.

try running that set in mame to see what the differences are.

Yeah, I will... I just haven't gotten a chance to dump the EPROMs. My cab isn't in a convenient location to get into, and the ROMs are on the middle PCB in the 3 board stack. :/

This is all odd because I don't recall version numbers or dates being displayed on the screen.

Not sure how one would find out what the differences are w/o a lot of playing and careful observation.

I just noted the 2/9/84 date printed on the EPROM labels when I noticed the Free Play didn't work. Searching for that date of Spy Hunter ROM brought me to this thread, which makes me believe that there's two different ROM sets, though MAME only has one. I have no idea what, if any, differences there are in the game.

When you do, send me a copy and I'll apply the freeplay hack to them for you.

I can tell you how to tell which version you have- but not which version corresponds to which date.
I've seen 2 versions, their are slight gameplay differences, but nothing too major. The easiest way to tell which is which is to unplug the main power connector and then boot the game. One version defaults to a single coin per credit, while the other defaults to 2 coins per credit.
Its been awhile since i've played them side by side, but iirc, the single coin is a tad easier, but the enforcer is much more accurate.
I'm not sure which version is in mame, but, iirc, the last program rom in mame is incorrect.

Okay, I finally got this working... the free play problem ended up being an EPROM problem. I reburned them to new EPROMs and everything's fine.

My ROM set matches what MAME has, except 11D, which is wrong as cdjump said. He emailed me his set which matched mine. They were all 1 coin, so I guess maybe there's another set out there still that's 2 coin default.

The wrong MAME ROM (11D) just has the upper address bit flipped... move the first 0x2000 to the end of the ROM and it's the same ROM. I'm guessing MAME just handles this problem in the driver, though it probably should be fixed.
