In attempt to troubleshoot a halfway missing sound effect (the helicopter sound), I did some touch ups on my cheap squeak deluxe board and I took my 12V regulator out between the switcher and my wiring harness. Now I have the same problem as before but my acceleration and steering wheel pots are stuck high. No movement on the steering wheel and the acceleration pot is full boar. My grail is now down :(

It may have taken me until 1:30am, but I got it back to playable, and no worse off than when I started this mess. These games are making me old, I think I have another white hair now...
I think it was corrupted settings Ram in the end. While I was in there I upgraded speaker grounds, and added a ground to the main board stack. I also metered the power at the board stack ROM sockets and got it up to 5.01V Took some doing to adjust out the pots, but I got that too.
The chopper sounds are still faint, but at this point, I don't care. They're all present at least. I'm considering myself lucky. This is an MCRIII game after all :)

Found I had dumped the equavalent of $84.50 into it before I had to clear the settings, it'll be awhile until I'm up to what I've paid for it, but not bad. What is that, side art and a power brick cap?

It's a terrible feeling when one's grail goes down. It's getting harder to get mileage out of 30 year old comptuers, but I'm tryin' Excuse the pun, off to bed.

That is the price of being a GameGod.. You end up absorbing some of their antiquity every time you touch them..

spy hunter

I just picked up a spy hunter... is there a specific sound when the truck is coming? As I'll i'm hearing is a faint tap tap noise.. it's in sync with the flashing button on the center of the steering wheel..

Thanks

Check the audio amp boards. One outputs to the left speaker and the other to the right. When I first aquired a SH half the sounds were missing plus the music. After resoldering all the connections on the amp boards all the sounds came back good and loud. The Cheapsqueak plays through both I believe. As for the thump thump with the weapons van light...thats just common to the game..possibly a dirty or bad ground.

Also i highly reccomend investing in the MCR conversion kit to get away from those old power supplys.

ok

So there is a missing sound? It's been years since i've played the game and can't remember what's supposed to be there.. guess i should play it in mame..

No, there's no game sound when the truck comes.

I don't recall if there's music but I know no there's no game sound.

There is a small thumping sound in sync with the weapons van light flashing.

And I recommend that you *don't* invest in a switcher for spy hunter unless you like a loud hum in your game audio.

thanks!

Yeah, I know of MCR Switcher hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...or buzzzzzzzzzzz

Funny thing is, i got this game from a guy who bought it in 1988 from an OP.. It's been in his house the whole time.. But, before he bought it, someone hacked in a switcher.. So the MCR ps is still there, but some of the wires going to it have been cut and rerouted to a switcher... guess what? There is no hummmm, or buzzing sound.. so, someone did it right?

Haven't wanted to mess with it, as the game works so well right now..

Hmmm.. I thought there was a resolution for that..oh well.

I think the resolution with switchers is hit or miss. And sometimes people have humming in the audio even with the linear power board because of a variety of other issues.
