Hi to all,

Yes, another Spy Hunter misterious problem!
I have this game since a while, all worked good except the common SBIE problem. Finally, I found a good SSIO board and that fixed the sound fx problem but now, I have an other problem!

I have no more video graphics except the helicopter and the script... All background is ok. The game play perfect with all the sound and music but no cars!

All straps are new, power supply have been rebuilt, 5v and 12v are perfect, all socketed IC have been cleaned and reseated and video gen have been tested with an other eprom set....

Any idea? I do not know what to check now!
Please help!

Usually when I pull the roms to clean them I verify the info on them.

Ok, I forget to telling you that I'm a pinball guy so my knowledge in video games is very limited! I have no way to test the roms... The only way I have to test them is to swap them with an other set...

With what you see on the pics, does it seem to come from the video gen or it could come from the cpu board too?

Thanks!

4 posts here, Welcome to the tech side of arcade games.

If you could test with a known working board you can rule out the monitor. I don't think that is your issue (monitor). I am fairly certain you have a board issue, bad ram, bad rom, connector dirty, broken trace. Did you try cleaning edge connector or measure the voltages?

I only tested the voltage on the PS.... I will cleaning the connectors again and I will try to test the voltage on the boards... These MCR boards are b***h to test in the game!!

I understand but what good is having power if it doesn't get to the chips where it is needed. Not bashing you but this has to be verified.

I have read (here) where many boards have been fixed with simple connector issues, not saying they all were easy fixes. My Nintendo, you always had to blow on the cartridge to get the games to work right.

If cleaning the connector fixes the problem, Great! It most likely will not but it was worth a try.

Ok, cleaned the connectors and tested the voltage on the board set and I have 5v everywhere... I even tested the ohm between all the boards and all is perfect... And issue is still there...

Is there a way to know wich rom generates the missing images?

Not real sure it is a rom problem. I have a similar issue with a Super Pac Man and suspect I have a ram/rom problem. You really need to start to verify what is good and what is not. Here is some other boards you might try.

Without some kind of test equipment, you can throw parts and money at this game and still will not work. I have done this in the past, don't make that mistake.

its not a rom problem - its most likely a ram problem on the video pcb. Possibly a bad 93422 or something in the addressing. Without it in hand to poke and probe at, its almost impossible to say for sure.

Ok, I contacted a guy localy and he has some spares board, so next weekend I will pick them up and make some test....
I really want this game works!!

I will keep you informed of the developments...

Thanks for your help for now!

Just out of curiosity, what country are you from? Your English is very broken.

I'm located "up north", Montreal area, Quebec.
I speak french, it's why my english it's not so good... Sorry about that, I do my best!

Your best is better than my French. Keep your questions coming.

Exactly.

AMX's English is pretty good if not perfect. It's better than a fair number of people here who speak English as their first language! :)

I'll have to agree with that. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with what someone is saying as you have to filter through alot of bad spelling and use of english grammar. Granted my spelling isn't the best, but I at least try.

My spelling has always been very bad and I use foxfire web browser that catches many of my spelling mistakes.

I do remember in the 5th grade I asked a teacher how to spell fone. She said sound it out and after looking though the "f's" several times, I said "I have been through the F's 5 times and there is no fone in this book". She said "look it up under ph" and I said, yeah that's how it sounds ph fone.

Ok, little update....

Tested the game with an other video gen board today and cdjump you are right, all is now fine, so now I'm sure the issue comes from the video gen.... Unfortunately, the guy don't want to sell me his good board!

I will start to do my homework and trying to find what's going on in this board! Lots of work for me, it's the first time I try to fix a video game!
