While restoring my fairly early Spy Hunter cab (#3612), I discovered the accelerator would not calibrate correctly, and the speed was not correct in game. After replacing the commonly failed pot with no remedy to the problem, we realized there was something wrong with the accelerator bar itself, as it was not dropping far enough. The manual I have does not speak of this early design, and I'm hoping someone may know the solution to this.

After taking the assembly apart, I realized the pedal was resting on the bar itself, metal to metal. It has been like this for a number of years as there are now grooves worn in both the pedal and a flat spot on the 90 degree shaft.

Here is a photo of the accelerator bar on my cab.

After some research, I discovered this early style accelerator bar used a standard Bally/Midway style joystick actuator, and they later changed this design which is reflected in the manual. Here is a photo of another early style accelerator assembly I was able to find.

I bought an original B/M actuator, and it fits the shaft perfectly however, in my quest to restore this cab back to it's original state, I'm hoping someone may know what the bearing looking type of retainer is, and where I might find something like this.

Below is a photo of my actuator on the shaft with no 'retainer'

I can think of numerous ways to 'make' it work, but if anyone can shed any light on this mystery, I would appreciate the word on this.

On mine, the actuator just kinda "floats". The bar has a groove in the outer area....allowing an "E" clip to secure everything. That's not a bearing you're seeing in the picture. It's a round washer and then the clip.

The odd thing is that there is absolutely no groove for an e-Clip on the bar. I ordered an actuator and e-clip from Mylstar as he said this was going to be the solution as well, however the bar on my machine is missing the groove as pictured in the first photo. Did they have an even earlier design than the e-clip possibly?

A lot of appliances use those push on clips. They come in many sizes. Any hardware store should have them. Or you could take a hacksaw or Dremel tool and cut a notch all the way around the shaft and install an E clip.
