Sportstation to Gauntlet Legends Dark Legacy swapping question.

Hi everyone!

I have a Sportstation (Vegas hardware) cabinet that is currently wired for 4 player 49 way joystick playability and I was thinking about getting a Gauntlet Legends Dark Legacy kit to go along with it to increase the cabinet's versatility.

I've heard from a couple different people that even though Gauntlet Legends DL used 49 ways and was on the Vegas Hardware there was some possible wiring differences as well as maybe a different board to handle the 49 ways.

I was wondering if this was indeed true and if it was what wiring harness I would need to get along with what board I'd need to get to get it all functional to see if I wanted to undertake this or if they were wrong and it would simply be a matter of swapping out the ROMs and HDD.

Thanks!

I have a GL/DL dedicated and I can't play sportsstation in my cab.

The wiring is set up differently.

The two options are:

1) run two wiring harnesses in the cabinet
2) switch to all 8 way sticks and re-wire that way.

I haven't done either, FYI, but those are the conclusions I've drawn myself.

I might not know what I'm talking about, but from another thread about similar subject matter, it's to my understanding that the Gauntlets can run the 49-ways directly off the main board, as opposed to how Blitz/Showtime/Sportstation does it with a separate I/O board (where all the JAMMA and player3/4 harnessing plugs into the I/O, then from the I/O runs to all the controls)

I find that weird, considering they're both Vegas boardsets, but therein lies the difference between an Atari Vegas and a Midway Vegas, I guess.

Going from memory - the Vegas board can be set to accept 8 way or 49way joys. That's not an issue. Also has option for standard res or medium res.
The IO board is unneeded as two of the joy harness connectors come off the main wiring harness and then two separate joy harness' plug directly into the board set. IIRC I don't believe there was any difference pcb wise between Atari or Midway. Same board .. Vegas only needing IC's, a PIC, hard drive and some games required the 3DFX voodoo banshee graphics chipset. Otherwise there was another chipset used I can;t remember.

that's what I was thinking of, lol

there's some bullshit involved in getting 8-ways to work, I just don't know what, as I don't have this game, nor do I want it. I'd just run the 49s on it anyway, HUGE difference.

I have been researching this, and the issue with the joysticks is that in the sports games they are mounted by turning them 90 degrees. So the wiring is different.

Here is everything you need to know.

I contacted ccatalyst recently about this mod and here is what he had to say:
Yes, i have all 3 games working in the cab, without any problems, there are a few things i have to do in order to play the other game,

#1) you have to tweak thre bright and contrast down on the midways sportstation, when you switch from gauntlet the screen contrast is too high, i guess i could attempt to fix it with a resistor bank across the rgb pins, but it takes aboujt 1/4" turn don on the contrast to fix, so that takes all of 2 secs.

#2) you must remove the 4 nuts holding the bottom of the joystick and rotate it 90 degrees, i have timed mhyself doing this and it takes about 30-45secs per joystick.

So to recap, when your playing GL no problem however to switch over, press player1 & player 2 sztart buttons at the same time, then pop open the joystick control cabinet, i keep it unscrewed anyways, and adjust the contrast and rotate the sticks, takes about 3 minutes or less for the entire game swap. I would have wanted to make it so the sticks would auto realign themselves electronically and the contrast would also adjust automatically, but im willing to sacrafice 3 mnutes rather than spend 3 months or longer to try and automate the remaining 2 manual changes.
