I am looking for 6.5 inch speakers for some of my Universal games (Zero Hour, Space Panic, Galaxy Wars). Picture attached of what I am replacing (two don't work and one has a severely damaged cone).

I see some are 4 ohm and others are 8 ohm. They also seem to vary by wattage (5W, 10-15W, 12W). I was surprised they all don't match (maybe they had been replaced before).

Anyway, pointers would be appreciated. My google-fu does not seem to be working.

I see these - https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=SPKR6IN

and

Is this the best match I am going to get?

are you trying to determine the speaker specs in those games from the factory, or what would be a suitable replacement regardless?

it's a different run of games, but if it's any help i can get a look at what's in Lady Bug or Cosmic Avenger (hopefully what i got is factory)

I remember when I restored my Ladybug, my speakers were thrashed and the cones were busted too. I ended up replacing both speakers with 2 massive and heavy suckers. I would have to check the thread to find out what the specs were.

Maybe I'm no help at all. Looks like I replaced 4 ohm, 5 watt speakers with 8 ohm, 200 watt speakers:

Though I do remember you have to wire one of them backwards so maybe that helps:

For the reason, check out my thread.

Start with the amplifiers output ohms and wattage, then mirroring the speakers ohms and watts will give you the best match. <-- That was the easy answer.

Ohms = power restriction
Watts = maximum output (amp) / input (speaker)

Let's say that the audio amp is 4 ohm and output is max at 25 watt. A 4 ohm speaker 25W speaker will allow maximum power from the amp and can handle max power (volume). The tradeoff is distortion at higher volume. Putting an 8 ohm 25W in the same place will not be as loud due to the amp working harder due the the extra resistance. Max volume wouldn't reach the speakers wattage capacity due to the power restriction.

Same scenario as above with matching 8 ohm/25W amp and speaker combo. However, the exception is if you mismatched a 4 ohm 25w speaker it would be twice as loud.

What phet ran in to was either series wiring or parallel wiring speakers. This either halves the "seen" ohm load or doubles depending on the method. This could get you in trouble in the 8 ohm amp with 2 4 ohm speakers in series because the ohm load would be at 2 ohms. This would really stress the amplifier due to the amount of current draw.

As I step off of the audiophile soapbox I'll say in a single speaker setup you can use the 4 ohm 25 watt speaker that you listed in the OP as a universal speaker and not notice really much of a difference since the volume levels on the games really not cranked up all that loud anyway.

I am trying to determine what the games likely had originally and then see who actually stocks them. In the event that exact matches are hard to find these days, I would then be looking for a replacement.

I thought these might just be the standard spec, but it does not seem to be the case.

While I am at it, I will applaud Universal's speaker placement. Nothing like putting a speaker at the bottom of the cabinet with a cloth speaker grill cover. No kid is going to poke that out (end sarcasm).

The speakers in the top picture were original to my Ladybug.

Awesome. Thanks.

At this point, I have the ones in my original picture, and those in my Cosmic Alien, Cosmic Avenger, and Devil Zone. Now to figure out why they are different :) Maybe that is just the way it was...
