Speakers can actually short out. Whoa.

I had a game we fixed the other day, get this... the speaker actually shorted out! I've seen them fall 'open' before, but never short. Both poles were a dead short, making it a 0 ohm speaker, lol. It burnt up the audio amp on the game pcb, too.

So, if you have no sound, check to see if the speaker is shorted together. Never seen that happen before.
 
Yes it happens. Just last week I replaced a shorted speaker (woofer) in a Terminator 2 pinball. The shorted speaker also took out the amplifier chip on the sound board.
 
Yep, if the voice coil shorts on the first couple windings you get a dead short. Typically they blow the winding right where the voice coil starts in the area where it passes through the cone. I repaired alot of blown woofers back in the day.
