Speaker upgrade?

I suspect you will not hear an improvement, not without an amp behind it at least. I replaced the speaker in my Asteroids mini and there was no change.

I did my Corvette pin machine, woffer and amp and it rocks! Shakes the machine like a cars exhaust!

I plan to do upgraded speakers, but with an amp and a small subwoofer, in my Afterburner, if I ever get around to it.

A few weeks ago I added a powered sub in my Out Run. Makes a very noticable difference.

But getting back to the OP... ehh... I'd guess it'd depend strongly on the game and it's OEM speaker configuation (and the condition of those speakers) as to if it would make a difference. I've heard of people upgrading speakers in their pins, but not so much in video games. Perhaps there is a short list of games that had great audio but a poor speaker selection that would benefit.... but I don't have such a list.

I've replaced a couple of speakers in my games and they all sounded better.
They're 30+ years old and usually cheapies to begin with.
Try it & you'll see.

Planning to do this in a Spy Hunter and Star Wars Cockpit - replace all 4 speakers.

Will any three way, 6x9 4 ohm impedance speaker replacement work? Thanks.

Tron speakers?

I was thinking of swapping the speakers in My Tron upright machine.

Anyone tried this?

Suggestions on which speakers to try?

Thanks much,

Rob

It all depends on whats in there. Ideally, you want to match the speaker impedance value with whats the factory had installed. I know in the audiophile world, combining lower-impedance speakers and driving them at high levels will stress out and possibly ruin the receiver/amplifier. Parts-express carries inexpensive speakers that should match up to what you have.

I've done it, always seems to help. I've used the speakers sold by Bob Roberts and twistedquarter with good results.
Biggest benefit is the Bass in explosions (like on Galaga).
I will admit the biggest improvement was on my Cyclone pinball. Tuba sounds were almost all missing with stock speakers, and it almost feels like it has a shaker motor in it with the new sub. Hell, the stock sub in that machine was only a 6" speaker!!

Thanks guys for the replies.

I will certainly match the impedance - anything less will kill the machines chip based Amp. The SW cockpit has 4 Ohm impedance. I will check the SH to make sure i match (should be 4?), and install these hopefully in the next two weeks.

Anybody ever switch out the crusty old 6x9 in a classic in favor of a nice newer Pioneer or Alpine version? What did it sound like? Any improvement?

One thing you have to watch out for is speaker location. Some speakers were placed close to the monitor and the newer speaker have bigger magnets in them which would be bad for the CRT.

8 ohm speakers?

Can anyone recommend a good 8 ohm 5 1/4 inch speaker source?

I need to replace 2 on my ultracade

Can only seem to find 4 ohm speakers out there....

Thanks

Rob

i googled 8 ohm 5 1/4" and your right, there isn't much of a selection. there's some paper cone 8ohm 5.25" for 4$ each (http://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8988) or really the only other semi reputable brand i saw was Cadence (http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=5qSLTc7zN4-btwfVsKQE&ved=0CHEQ8wIwADge#) and the magnet on that might be a little large.

Thanks for the links Joey!

Much appreciated

Rob

partsexpress nearly always has at least one speaker of any particular size in the clearance/sale section. A $10 speaker bought like that usually blows away the quality of what you'd find in most things. Many of the home theater speakers, name brands, you'll often find at places like Best Buy use really cheap drivers, since they're built as cheaply as possible to maximize profit. When you get into real (expensive) DIY speaker drivers, the quality difference is amazing.

Another thing to look at is how efficient the speaker is. The higher db to watt ratio. You want the higher db so it would not drive the amplifier circuit too hard.
Example:
Speaker A is rated at 87 db @ 1 watt @ 1 meter from speaker.
Speaker B is rated at 93 db @ 1 watt @ 1 meter from speaker.
Speaker A will need 4 watts to create the same loudness as speaker B's 1 watt.
You have to double the wattage for each 3 db gain.
Look at how efficient this speaker is:

Forgive me, but I'm a little lost on all of this audio stuff. The seakers that Joeycuda brought up look good, but will those need an amp? Both the speakers on one of the POS cocktail tables I bought are ripped; the table I'm using for the 60-in-1. Can I just pop either of those speakers from partsdirect in the cab and they'll work without any extra amplification?
