Last Saturday, at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York, a new exhibit opened. Entitled Spacewar! the large, dark space tells the story of science fiction video games from inception to now. True to the heritage of the games the exhibit houses, though, Spacewar! is an interactive exhibit, and when we visited, several teenagers were milling around, playing Space Invaders and Star Wars. Dollars can be exchanged for custom tokens, and each game costs 25 cents to play.

It seems strange they put so much work in on making the earlier games look good, other ones look like they didn't even try to do a restore or anything.

"Asteroids was released in 1979 to great popularity and success. The basic goal of the game is to destroy incoming flying saucers."

Ummm....did the writer even read the name of the game?

And I love their info placards. Very classy. I should do one of those up for each of my games.

Very nice presentation, i love the placards. i love to do something like that in smaller scale to some of my collection. The history of the these games is the reason i enjoy collecting them.

It's a fun place to go for sure. Don't forget the bring a blank dvd and slide it into the side of the building (no joke, look it up). Oddly enough, I met that guy Jason several years ago when a friend brought him to check out an old decommissioned power station I knew about. It's a small world. Stop in sometime, it's a couple blocks from the Q and R subway lines.
