Ok guys, here is the question. I have a Space Zap cocktail style game I was wondering if it is worth redoing. Its complete, except the monitor bezel and back side "glass retaining bracket".
It will need the vaneer replaced, all 4 of the boards are complete. The wiring will need to be cleaned up. CPU's will need to be sand blasted and polish up the buttons.
Its none working , I get neck glow, and a white screen. I think things just may need to be reseated and the power board rebuilt.
I recently posted on the wanted site the monitor bezel but have had no hits. So kinda think it may be a hard on to come up with.
So, question is, should I waste the time refurbishing or just part it out? I am new to the owning of a arcade game but am getting the bug to bring this back to life.,
Seeing its a small game and pretty much complete, I think its something i would like to tackle
but just wondering if people think I its over my head or a waste of time.
Just a few tid-bits, 518 is on the coin counter, serial number is 308 and I have never played the game.

It's not very common, and for that reason I'd recommend you not part it out - keep it or sell it to someone who wants to restore it. That appears to be woodgrain laminate, not vinyl, from the picture. You'd really need to do that in laminate to do it 'right'. Also, the upright and mini have a tinted color plastic overlay over the monitor. I'd guess that's long gone on yours, but you'd still be ok without it. For the bezel, I'd keep my eyes open if I were you, but you could substitute it with glass until you find an original piece.

Looks to be the formica type.

Space Zap is a fun game, but I'm partial to it, own the upright, and the cabinet is a big part of the coolness factor. That cocktail just looks drab IMO. If you like the game though, try to save it for sure. Even if you can't find a bezel you can probably be just as happy with a plain smoked plexi.

Just noticed though, you mentioned all 4 board are complete? There are 5 boards in the card rack for space zap, sounds like your missing something.

If you do part it out, I may buy a few parts just to have on hand, if the price is right, plus I could use at least one of the big buttons.

Heres mine...

try playing it in mame before you decide anything. if the replay value is there for you, then try restoring it. if not, then see if you can sell it to someone who will appreciate it.

I just watched that video last night when I was looking up info on the game. Your right, that cocktail style is kinda plan, and I do love that U/R of yours, very cool looking with the lights and all.

I've got a cocktail Space Zap that I restored using parts of 3 games, along the way I found a set of NOS buttons and an NOS bezel which I figured was pretty uncommon for the cocktail.

It is an uncommon game in the cocktail version and I'd recommend restoring it as others suggested. You'll get so much more enjoyment out of it, and the finished project will be something you can be proud of.

Fix it! I've had a Space Zap neglected in the corner for years now. I figured sooner or later Id get rid of it but once I got it working I keep playing it, and even tonight I was thinking about finishing the restore since it's mostly apart anyway. It's one I actually play!
