Last night I had a few free minutes to fire up MAME, and I wanted to try out Space Wars. All that would happen when I coined it up was the display would show credits were registered but that was it. I checked out the key configuration and for whatever reason the game wouldn't start. I tried hitting F3 to "reset" the game, and every other key on the keyboard and got nothing.

From what I could see (as I have never played this game before), it looked almost like a game that would be similar to Omega Race in graphics. I saw 2 ships, so I guessing you go head-to-head or something to that effect?

Oh, and for people who don't know, you can see a Space Wars in Flynn's Arcade in the original TRON.

If you're hitting F3 and nothing happens, you've got something wrong with MAME(config?) or your keyboard.

F3 is a system key, and has nothing to do with the game driver.

What version of MAME are you running btw?

0.111u1: Robert fixed gfx and random resets.

You need to select one of the ten game configurations, which by default are mapped to your keyboard's numeric keypad. The original game had ten keys labeled 0-9, which selected the game options shown in the first attached image.

Pressing a numeric button a second time selected a game modifier, shown in the second attached image.

Starting a game in MAME requires pressing "5" on the main keyboard for a coin, then any of the numeric keypad numbers to start.

Thanks all- at the moment I do not recall what version of MAME I have, but it's allowed every game to work that I currently have until this one. I'll try this out the next time I get a chance.

Nothing like playing the dedicated version. Has anyone actually read the marquee before? Look at the upper left. Quote:

"Ship missing, Frustrated, etc, press reset."

"Frustrated, etc." Awesome.

Thanks, works for me now too...never thought of using the keypad to start a game. If you look at the key settings for that specific game, it doesn't show a start button ;) What was it with Cinematronics and using those calculator type buttons? (Sundance has them too)

Just very, very early arcade game technology, I'm thinking.

4-1 is my favorite setting at the moment. :)
