Space Invaders....

Now this is kind of funny... after the last post... I stared to freak out thinking I did the colors in the incorrect order... but I didn't phew!!!! Red is first on the white portion of the cab but second on the blue portion...

Anyway back to business...

Black tomorrow!!!

Stickin' to the schedule!!!

Got the black done today...

It looks nice... the stencils are a bit different than the original art... but the artwork looks so darn good with new colors. I also dropped the alien on the front down right to the edge of the cab... this is not how the stencil has it... it is however how my cab was originally painted.

again... nice light coat... got to be careful with that darn rustoleum... sometimes it spits.

I found it easier to remove the stencil from the bottom up due to the mask around the legs.

Overall I'm thrilled... cant wait to get the rest of it done so it can be put in the gameroom!!!

Great job so far - it looks fantastic. After all the stencils are done, do you clear coat it?

Thanks... you know what... this is my third stencil job... every time I think ... "should I clear coat?'
I haven't done it yet... so I'm not sure... I probably wont. I worry about the finish and if I can make it look good without an HVLP sprayer.

I just finished the white... this stencil kit is a lot of work and I wouldn't recommend this for the greenhorn. Alignment is key here and without registration marks you have to rely on relative position on the cab. For the sides, I used the top edge as my guide which seemed to work well. Another thing, because the pre-mask is two pieces, don't try to peel it off as one piece... take each half off separaterly.

Here is the first layer of the large stencil... color order is white, black, red (this is according to the notes on the stencils).

Here is where it starts to look really neat...

Once you get those aliens back on the sides... it really starts to feel closer to done :)

Red is last... tonight!

The hard part is OVER!!!!

This is without a doubt the most time consuming paint job I've done to date... sooooo much masking/re-masking etc... inside/outside paint... I'm exhausted.

Here are the final shots...

Tomorrow it will get hauled down stairs where it will be put back together :)

I've a few touch ups but nothing major left...

Some folks have asked about the blue being so dark... my original machine was very dark, actually much darker than most space invaders cabs... the paint is matched to that. It may be slightly darker but its definitely not that bright blue commonly associated with this cab. I think I would like it up a tick in blue but it still looks damned good IMHO.

Love the end result, seemed like the blue color was lighter in your first pictures. Was more purplish blue, looks darker now for some reason. Don't get me wrong though, the machine looks fantastic!

edit - never mind, I checked back again, that was when the paint was still wet. Dried much darker.
