Space Invaders....

Trying to follow the progress on this, but I can't see any pics. Did they all disappear, or is it me.

Hmm... the last post was pic-less... all of the original ones should still be there... they are linked to my comcast pics...

Tonight I will be painting the inside and the white part of the cab... so more pics are coming...

Same for me. I looked at this thread last night and they were there, but now my browser is waiting for home.comcast.net. They must be having some problems currently.

Painting has begun...

Ok I had to deviate from my initial plan... the reason... I had painted the blacks in the wrong order !!! I painted the satin trim first then masked it off and painted the inside flat black... I didn't wait long enough to mask the satin trim... so when I removed the tape... it took off some pieces of paint.... I wasn't going to remove the masking but its a good thing I did... Had I done that at the end I would have been pee-oe-d!!

So today I masked the insides (covered openings) and painted the satin trim again... since the satin black along the insides of the control panel area intersect with white... white ain't happening ... not yet anyway. So I decided to do the blue first.

Here is the first coat of blue and the satin trim... I always paint the first coat a little thinner than other coats as it sits directly on the wood panel. I never prime.

Very nice! I'm going to completely restore/restencil my SI eventually. You just can't beat cabs with mirrors and black lights!

Yeah... Love these cabs... they are my personal favorites... Will be enjoying the heck out of this one when its done... Got a new moon and control panel from TOG also I have a glass bezel which has very little fading around the bulbs.

I'm going to experiment with building a new light board using a 20" cold cathode tube set back so that I don't cause anymore problems for the ink on the glass bezel. I know its not original but I don't want any damage to happen to the bezel.

A little more progress...

I was able to get the rear doors re-fabbed today... I used 1/2" sanded birch ply instead of particle (which I can't find in 1/2" anyway) or MDF. They are much better with this material than the original brittle particle board anyway...

(for those of you who want the dimensions of the doors... hang tight... I have them and need to make a couple of drawings)

Coming along nicely. Did the original rear doors have a mesh behind the vents? If so you should be able to find that at home depot or similar hardware store.

I can't wait to see the finished cab. Thats always my weakness. I want to start assembling and don't put enough coats of paint on.

Last Coat of Blue!!!!

It always works out to 6 coats for me... I try to do less but I just don't get the results I'm after if I use any less than 6 coats... (this is of course with a roller)

Here is the last sanding... I use 600 grit between the last 2 coats

Last coat... looks a little purple at first...

As it dries ... it settles into a nice deep blue... I've noticed some SI's are a little lighter... mine was quite dark (the lighting in the garage makes it look even darker than it really is)... I used the back door as the color match and its really spot on.

White is tomorrow!!!!!

Amazing stuff!

These games are classics and worth every ounce of effort put into them.

Getting there, looking forward to seeing it progress :)

Thanks! I'm anxious too... I can't wait to stencil... but 6 coats = 6 days minimum per color for me.

I'm thinking I will probably stencil each color all at once... I originally had planned to stencil the blue side then the white... but now I'm rethinking it a bit, probably better to do it in one shot.

I'm not sure of the ordering of the stencils yet... I've not even taken them out of the box.

GREAT Job!!!
Can't wait to see it complete. Looking forward to starting my resto. How hard was it to take out the kick panel. I'm looking to replace the front panel and both sides.

Removing the kick panel is a little tricky as the floor is tounged into it... that is you can't simply slide it out. Its also nailed into the sides as well. Mine was pretty brittle so it came out in pieces which made it easier. I had to cut the tongue off of the front edge of the floor board to get the new kickplate in. Also you are planning on replacing the sides? Are you talking about the forward portions of the cab (white colored area)? That's going to be tricky. Based upon what I've observed, it appears these cabs were made in two halves and mated together with adhesive and screws... even the floor is two pieces...

If you must replace the sides... take your time dismantling it... breaking the adhesive bonds could ressult in a ton of unwanted (and not so fun) work. ;)

Tomorrow is coat 4, tues 5, wed 6... stencils by the weekend!!!! I just finished putting a new water pump in my 01 Durango today so I don't have to do that next weekend ;)

Stencilling has Begun!!!

Not gonna lie... don't care for the speckling effect once the cab is nice and clean... but it came out good and it will be more authentic when all is said and done...
SI-SpeckledFront.JPG

Believe it or not it was tough to get the right amount of splatter... I used a natural bristle brush and hacked it down to about 3/4" of brush then sliced some of the bristles out ... using a flicking motion (fingers against the brush). Use a pair of latex gloves... its friggin messy. I tried and tried against a cardboard box to get the method good enough. Believe me... it was stressful!!!! I had this nice pristine white paint job... and if I f'd this up... I would have to probably quit!!!!

These stencils are from ThisOldGame.com For those of you who have used stencils from Gamestencils.com, these are a wee bit different. The thickness of the vinyl appears to be a bit thinner than gamestencils. Also gamestencils cuts registration marks into each layer... ThisOldGame stencils do not have that aspect. However they are nicely cut and fit the cab pretty well so if you match it up with the profile of the cab... your done. I shifted mine up just a bit because of where the foot of the bottom alien landed... it was a wee to close for comfort.
