Space Invaders vs. Gorf

Get the Gorf. It was probably the first multi-game, evar.

SI was cool back in the day but I wouldn't want one now. I actually think the 2600 version of SI was superior to the arcade original.

Don't eat the mushrooms......

I am gonna attack you with MY mushroom person if you don't stop harassing me about that movie.

The Outer Limits needs a final Space-themed game to fill the last open slot.

Gameplay: Space Invaders. GORF is fun, but the main gimmick is the 5-in-1 idea pushing the player on to the flagship screen. Space Invaders is a more difficult and more complex game. Space Invaders wins here for the same reasons that Galaxian > Galaga.

Cabinet Beauty: close, but the scale-tipper is the sideart. Space Invaders has that awesome full side stencilled Invaders sideart. GORF has small, ill-fitting generic spaceship decals. Space Invaders' sideart says "we have come to DESTROY YOU." GORF's says "am I a LEGO set? Or birthday wrapping paper? Or a heat-transfer, surf shop t-shirt decal? I don't know either!"

Overall Game Room Ambience: Space Invaders. Creepy black and white graphics with green / yellow / red overlay. Eerie, foreboding marching aliens sound identifiable from 3/4 of a mile away. GORF scores points for the awesomely bad voice and the bold purple marquee, but it's not enough to push it over the top.

Classic Status: No question. Space Invaders caused a Yen shortage. GORF was promoed by Scott "Cha Chi" Baio on some Saturday morning TV show.

Winner: Space Invaders.

GORF is a great addition to any gameroom, but if only picking up one, it has to be SI.

* and remember Space Cadets, it's technically "GORF," an acronymn for Galactic Orbiting Robot Force. :)

Tried that already. Mad Planets is still on the list, but one has to come up for sale locally before I pull any triggers.

So, will something else come out of the Outel Rimits wing if you find one? I thought you said you only have room for 1 more game, broheem.

MP will replace Q*bert, Q*bert will move back into Galaxy Blue's 'Great Room'.

GORF all the way, I've owned and played both a lot, and nostalgia can only carry so much weight; eventually gameplay wins out.

Trend-wise, I see GORF's star rising while Space Invaders seems flat. Not to totally knock Space Invaders, it's the first arcade game I ever played and very significant for a lot of us for that very reason.

It's just that they seem readily available and fairly cheap (as in $125 working at SuperAuctions cheap) where GORF's seem a little more challenging to find, almost in the range of nice Q*berts.

Everyone mentions the SI sideart, but it's not going to show in your arcade anyway.

That sucks, cause those 2 cabs need to be side by side. Anything else we can move?

Pole Position Cockpit is the only other 'non-space game' that is in the Outer Limits. Ironically, though it is not 'space-themed', it is where it is due to 'space issues'.

I own both - and my SI has the 8 in 1 multigame in it.

I'm a huge advocate of B/W games but if I had to make choice I would go with Gorf.

That being said, I wanted a SI too (it's B/W after all and everyone knows SI), and finally found one last year. I've had my Gorf for about 8 years though.

Good luck with which ever you select.

Tom

Gorf. SI has never done anything for me... even BITD. (I owned a SI Deluxe the first time around and sold it off quickly without *any* regrets)

-Gameplay = Gorf
-Cabinet Beauty = Tie
-Overall Game Room Ambiance = Tie
-Classic status = SI

As a big fan of Gorf, I have to see that I would be happy with either. The game play on Gorf is great but SI just exudes "Classic"

I think both cabinets look cool. Gorf has some really cool lighting that makes the cab stand out in my gameroom (plus speech). SI has that classic paint job (for which stencils are available to make it nice and pretty)

I'd have to say you can't go wrong with either one.

For a guy who owns such a pristine Gorf and has the T-shirt to boot I'd say this is as unbiased opinon as I have ever read.

Wow, wrong on two counts...but that is a whole different argument :D

That right there is even more of a reason to own one. What screams more "Outer Limits" that Galactic Orbiting Robot Force!

I have both, and the kit in the SI. If it came down to a choice I 'had' to make between the 2 I would do Gorf just for the talking and multiple games. But get both man.. The SI I got in a deal with another game.. I didn't want it at all thinking it would be completely boring and actually postponed the deal thinking about it because I didn't want to have to take it. But got it running, put a new black light in it and the look totally kicks @ss... I didn't remember it looking so cool inside.. ended up buying a new moon, stencils, the kit..etc..etc..from not wanting it to $$$ on it.. and now play it easily as much as any other game. Neither would be the first I would part with.

Which is coolest in terms of:

-Gameplay.. Hard call here. To me they are just different enough to give them both a thumbs up. SI is definitely the harder game. Most people I know can't ever get a high enough score to achieve a high score ranking. Simple concept but challenging. Expect to die quickly unless you are a really good player. Gorf is a lot more forgiving and easy to play for the non gamer. It also has 4or 5 different levels within the game where as SI only has one. Gorf has no high score save or kit. SI does have a kit available that allows high score save as well as a couple other games that are pretty similar to SI.

-Cabinet Beauty gorf is ok when it comes to the cab. The side art is lackluster but looking at the game head on, the bezel with lighted rank, cp and art work above the bezel have a pretty cool look. Gorf does kinda hit the nail on the head when it comes to the 80's space theme. I would give this one to SI though as the side art is pretty awesome and iconic, the marquee/bezel in one is a classic look that most games do not have.

-Overall Game Room Ambiance. The white black light in SI is really cool as well is the older marquee/bezel in one style. Both of these things are cool as far as ambiance goes. Also when playing the game the sounds are pretty iconic if you've ever been in an arcade. I would still give the win in this category to gorf simply for the speech.

-Classic status SI is more classic, hands down. I love gorf but plenty of people have never even heard of it let alone played it.

Phet, do you have any B/W games in your arcade now? I think every 'classic' arcade deserves at least one. I'm a huge fan of them, and SI/SID is classic, but there's lots of great B/W games out there...

Can't go wrong with Gorf in the meantime though, awesome game...

I have had both in my gameroom for 8 years and if I had to pick one over the other I wouldnt. Definatly get them both and then make your own decision. My personal opinion I would have said Space Invaders but as another Klover pointed out yours has the rare vents above the control panel. In 8 years I have yet to see one with vents in person. If I remember right there is another difference also, is it an extra light i cant remember.I built my Space invaders taking all the best parts from 3 and to this day I have never seen a nicer one in person. It has an NOS control panel as well as the Glass monitor bezel...Oh thats another thing see if your Space Invaders has the glas bezel or the cheezy plastic one. Glass is way cooler as long as its in great shape..But all said and done I will allways have both their both great games and totally different.Best to ya.....Dave
