Which is coolest in terms of:

-Gameplay
-Cabinet Beauty
-Overall Game Room Ambiance
-Classic status

?

I have a chance to pick up one or the other. Both sitting at the $300 mark. Working and in good (not restored) shape. The Outer Limits needs a final Space-themed game to fill the last open slot.

GORF all the way. Why?

1) It gives you many different variations of games to play (Including a near direct clone of SI)
2) Shooting aliens with a flight stick is MUCH more satisfying.
3) The game talks to you and heckles you.
4) The entire cabinet lights up the room.
5) You can increase your number of lives depending on the amount of credits you put in.

I love my GORF.

Gameplay - Gorf
Cabinet Beauty - Space Invaders
Overall Game Room Ambience - Space Invaders
Classic Status - Space Invaders

As much as I love Gorf as a video game over Space Invaders, I do not think I could choose it over SI if I could only own one. This is not taking how much each is worth into account, just my personal preference.

Gameplay - Gorf (hands down)... but considering the SI has a nice Multi-kit for it, SI comes VERY VERY close (with the kit).

Cabinet Beauty - VERY CLOSE but I give it to Space Invaders due to the nostalgia factor, how awesome the "invaders" look... and of course the kickass black-light moon presentation. Gorf is a great looking cab too, but the nod goes to Space Invaders.

Overall Game Room Ambiance - VERY CLOSE again...but again I have to give the nod to Space Invaders. It just looks "that cool" and of course when someone is playing it it's hard to beat the BOOM BOOM BOOM sounds of the invaders.

Classic Status - No doubt... Space Invaders. While Gorf is a great game... and even has better gameplay than SI... it simply can't cut the mustard when it comes to "classic status".

Which is coolest in terms of:

-Gameplay: Gorf since is has more variety
-Cabinet Beauty: Space Invaders has a much more interesting cabinet and art IMO
-Overall Game Room Ambiance: Gorf because it has the cool glowing flight stick
-Classic status: Space Invaders is obviously more renowned as a classic than Gorf. but there's still much Gorf love around here.

I'd say get the Gorf because I've seen pretty good condition Space Invaders machines selling for less than $300 ($200-250 generally); I wouldn't pay $300 for one that isn't in at least pretty good condition.

Update: the Gorf has the monitor chassis removed (tube still there), price lowered to $225. SI fully works and is complete, gent is firm at $300. Keep in mind that either seller's pics don't really show me shit at this point.

I'm here to inject my usual negativity, I pick D. None of the Above. :) I had a chance to buy both of these titles off of XXI21 at prices you would probably kick me in the nuts over if you knew that I'd passed (I have major space limitations, give me a break). For me, the gameplay of both did not hold up over time and they become boring and repetitive quickly. Surely there is a better spaced themed game out there you can get, no? That said it would be a tough choice for me if you held my feet to the fire and made me pick. S.I. would be the "classic" choice and there is a multi-kit for it. Gorf talks to you and has slightly better game play IMO.

That's where I am right now. The price reduction may sway me though, as I have plenty of monitors to throw in place of the probably burned G07 tube that's in the Gorf.

I had a pretty nice SI Dlx that I got rid of. Had a very nice Gorf that I got rid of years ago.

I missed the Gorf and looked for years and found and restored one. I don't really miss the SI. Here's mine:

I agree. I would own neither. Zzzzzzz.

Hotcakes, you are obviously homo-hyperactive and suffer from some sort of supercharged ADD. I am not sure that you ever sleep, so enuff with the ZZZZZZ's. You live an entire collector's lifetime in an Earth-week. Most of us can appreciate games that don't always move at Mach 12. I love SI, and have never played Gorf. Please don't shit on my thread. Would the mods please delete Johnny's negative comments.

Or you could just make an offer on both of them, take them both home, play both of them for a week or so, and then decide which one you like better. Then take the reject, clean it up, and sell it.

Space Invaders is one of my favorite games. Still trying to get a nice one. But I would still probably have to go with Gorf if I could only own one. I love Gorf - the gameplay is great, and I love that speech feature. Space Invaders definitely has a cooler cabinet though, and it's also an awesome game. But... Space Invaders is also a lot more common than Gorf... but it seems to be a lot harder to find one in good shape. Space Invaders also has a lot more "classic" to it. Everyone recognises Space Invaders. Not so much with Gorf.

I love the Space Invaders cabinet design though. With the mirror, backdrop, and black light, it all fits together perfectly. You don't feel as much like you're looking into a monitor, you just see the image. I love the fact that they combined simple, clever tricks to make the game seem even more impressive (colored strips on a black and white monitor, printed cardboard background graphics, etc). Space Invaders also has that awesome low thumping noise like Asteroids. The game has a "presence" all it's own.

But, it looks like Gorf is also going to be cheaper - I'm sure you have spare monitors laying around you could put in there.

Edit: If you do intend to buy Gorf - make sure it works, and the speech works (that speech chip is hard to get!). That boardset is kinda complicated. You're going to probably want to make sure you can test the video output - because the pattern transfer board can be bad, and the game will still play fine - just with bad graphics. And that board is a pain to repair. If there's a bunch of horizontal lines in the picture, it's just a bad RAM chip. Usually, your ship will explode when it touches one of those lines (i.e. instantly).

LOL! You are the best.

Gorf is just a "glitzier"(sp) version of SI to me, I will own a SI one day as it was the first coin op videogame that I lost my quarter dropping virginity with as a very young lad ;)

I can't believe you're even dithering about this. Space Invaders was one of those games of the 70's like Pong and Tank that was a "Rage" for a time. There is only one choice as far as I'm concerned and I know you're a nostalgia hound like I am. SI all the way

Don't pull the nostalgia card on me Rick, it could cost me an extra $75, you S.O.B.
