That is Space Invaders sucks in a non-dedicated cabinet :)

I of course have the typical 60-1 and really like most of the games on it but I tried playing Space Invaders a few times and it sucked.

Well thanks to KazooBR for meeting me halfway I picked up nice dedicated Space Invaders Deluxe last weekend. Wow what a difference playing the game in it's dedicated cabinet makes. I can't get enough of it. I also purchased the 8-1 kit from http://www.brasington.org/arcade/ which is on sale now and that kit is sweet!

I know some games can be played in other cabinets or on mame but this is one you really need to play in its original cabinet.

Nothing like playing it with the mirrored backdrop and correct sounds (make sure you have them turned up...gotta love the thumping so loud, you can feel it on your chest :D )

Dude, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that title and who posted it ... I thought there was some big problem with the game!! Whew!

Glad you like it. That game is seriously cool when everything is setup right. My kids hadn't ever seen a floating image like that, they thought it was really neat.

What did you decide to do with the black light shielding? I think my temporary solution put the light output just right but don't know that I'd keep it there long term.

even the mini sucks. no backdrop or blacklight. might as well be playing it on a multi jamma board at that point.

I have one of these for sale, if anyone's near AZ and wants one... :D

I really like the way you had the black light shielded a bit. It keeps the bases nice and bright at the bottom and it also allows you to keep the full black light effect. Without the shield I had a hard time seeing the invaders missiles when they were close to the bottom of the screen. Thanks again and that 8-1 kit is really cool in there.

I agree. I think the Midway upright is the best way to play the game and if you have only played it in emulation than you are not getting the full effect and you should give the game another chance. It is also one of the best looking cabinets around. I've always loved that side art. The only other version I really play is on the Atari 2600 which allows two players to play at the same time and that is a lot of fun too.

I will confess I don't like using the Left and Right buttons for Space Invaders, I much prefer using a joystick. With that said, I totally agree the actual cabinet with glass and backdrop look gorgeous and are the best way to play.
If I had my perfect way, I would get one of those rarer joystick cabs, I think someone other than Taito released them? Or was that the mini cab? Someone help me out here. I know dedicated Space Invaders exist with joysticks and not L/R buttons.

Deluxe is an awesome cab too. By 'black light shielding', do you mean the moon?

I have the SI moon in my deluxe, but I kept the SID cityscape and will probably mount that on top of the cab like an arcade topper.

No, Since the White Black Light bulb is so bright it makes the bottom portion of the cityscape light up to much. It's hard to see the missiles when they get to the lower portion of the screen, so Brian had installed a shield between the bulb and the cityscape so it didn't shine through so much. He just used the white cardboard that the bulb was originally wrapped in. I might make a more permanent solution but by doing that it makes the bottom crystal clear and everything else is still lite up nice and bright.
