On my just acquired Space Invaders upright occasionally on boot up the game will make very loud noise. It sounds like the game noises playing all at once. The screen is also garbled. It last only a few seconds and then stops and then finishes booting up normally. It doesn't happen all the time. Maybe 2 or 3 times out of 10. When I tried to add a Braze High score save kit, the loud boot up noise and garbled screen would not stop. After about 30 seconds I turned the game off. I tried that several times with the same results. I returned the kit thinking there's something wrong with it but now I'm not so sure. Any ideas? Thank you.

I would check your voltages on the power supply they might not be building up properly. When was the last time the power supply was capped?

Thanks. Power supply is brand new. One of these types.

I'm gonna guess reset line problems. When you put a switcher in, basically you're making the watchdog reset the board at the beginning, and while it's doing that the voltage on the board probably allows all the sounds to fire.

The original power supply had a reset section which the switcher doesn't

Is it fixable? Would I have to go back to an original style power supply? Sorry for the newbie questions but this is my first arcade game.

How do you have the power supply wired up? I think when I've done it in the past the reset line gets tied high or low, can't remember.

the reset line has to start high and then go low if I remember it right. it can't remain stagnant or it will never boot.

I'm not sure how it's wired right now. I'll have to take a closer look but that power supply with the reset looks like the solution. Thanks everyone.

The game currently has the reset tied to common on the power supply. Adding that power reset supply might be difficult because of how it's wired now.

maybe tie that wire to the board to a double throw switch one way to 5 volts then the other to gnd. it won't be right but it will make it work for now until you decide to rewire it the right way. mine sometimes make noise for about 30 seconds when it is running right but goes away the moment I start the game the first time. hae not figured it out since when ever I get serious to find it it never does it.

I think you're fine, I've wired them up to a switcher before just couldn't remember if it had to be high or low on the reset. Basically the watchdog will reset the board and then your reset line will be low like it should be (if that's how it's supposed to be wired).

The byproduct is though that you might have the sound problem when you first turn it on. That's my guess at least. I think I've had that same thing on them before but it never bothered me.

It's really not doing it at all now. I guess the main thing I'm wondering now is if this issue caused my Braze High Score Saver kit to malfunction. I returned the kit and I'm waiting for a replacement (if they find something wrong with it). I'm hoping it was just a bad kit. I don't know how purists feel about these kits. I thought they were pretty popular. I'm not going to go crazy if I can't get the kit to work. I just won't add it.

it looks like you have a connector with female parts. if that is what I see in your picture then itshould plug onto the male parts of the 8080 adapter. as long as you tape the terminal ends you have on the switcher so that they do not make contact with anything when they are removed

I don't think all the wires are on that connector. You can't see in the picture but there are wires cut.

The Braze 8-in-1 SI MultiKit was (and is) one of the best enhancements one can make to a SI/DLX cabinet, IMHO. I don't recall anyone arguing this ...

Also worth it for the config/self-test features.

BTW, I run the original linear in my DLX cab. I prefer the power supplies in my games to remain original.
These may (or may not) include soft-start or delay features which you will not have with a switcher. (YMMV)

Thanks. I'm still hoping to be able to use the kit. If I go back to an original power supply, or add that adaptor to the switching power supply I'm confused about the wiring. My confusing is about the wires that are on the switching power supply now. Where do they go? Where did they go? They look original except for the lugs on the end but they look different then what's left on the plastic connector.

wugly you are saying to tape them up but where did the go? I guess I need a pinout of the plastic plug.

Anyone have a closeup picture of the original power supply connector the shows that wires? I'm guessing what they did is remove the needed wires from the 24 pin AMP connector and installed them directly on the switching power supply. I honestly don't know how the game works without all the wires from that connector actually connected.
