It opened on June 4, 2015, so it's a pretty new thing.

Not sure if the whole "Hall of Fame" idea for video games really works. Just feels like a whole slew of games from the Golden Age should've gotten in right off the bat in last year's inaugural class, no questions asked (Space Invaders being one of them).

It's cool that someone is trying to do SOMETHING to honor ground-breaking titles from several eras and cover all bases (arcade, home, PC...how long before handhelds get consideration?)...I'm just not sure how well that it can be really be done under a HOF framework.

A "HOF" for inanimate objects? Intellectual property? Is that a first?

Was Space Invaders in attendance at the ceremony to receive their award in person? Did they give a speech?

I think Space Invaders should have been the first game inducted...

That was the first game of the true Arcade Revolution.

Two of these do not belong, and I sure as hell ain't talking about the Oregon Trail.

Probably should be Pong, but I agree with you...partly because I remember what an impact Space Invaders had (I was 7 when I first played it), and it was huge (not that you needed me to tell you that). I was too young to have any memories of Pong. Space Invaders also had so much more of an influence on future games...without Space invaders, many future (and also ground-breaking shooters) don't follow...though with all of the innovating going on back then, I'm guessing some kind of shooter genre still would have evolved. But SI clearly had a massive role in helping to shape and create an entire genre of game...that led to plenty of evolved clones hitting the market, with imitation being the most sincere form of flattery of course. Pong was clearly very important for many reasons, but it's not like its actual gameplay model is legendary.

No, Pong IS the grand-daddy of all video games. It was not only "proof of concept", but a huge money maker as well.

However, I'm not sure I can support a "Hall of Fame" for video games, but I'd need more information on how the process works. When a games goes in..... is the creator of that game involved in the ceremony(assuming they are still alive)? If not, WHY not? Without the person(s) who created it.... it just seems silly.
