So most people have heard that Space Invaders caused a shortage of the 100 Yen coin back when it first released, but it didn't cost 100 Yen per credit did it? 100 Yen is equivalent to 1 dollar, so that would be pretty steep for 1978! Maybe the machines only accepted that coin, but you'd get 2 or 4 credits for it?

I may be misinterpreting the info I found but what I googled looked more like the it was about 240 yen to one US dollar around 1980. So 100 yen would be less than but closer to .50 I guess.

Ok, so the Yen was just a lot weaker back then. By my math that would be about 40 cents, which isn't too surprising since things in Japan tend to cost more than in the US anyway. But a buck to play Space Invaders back in 1978 would've been a bit ridiculous.

Gnaw, come-on. It's not ridiculous! It's Space Invaders! ;)
