My SID UFOs started making horrible sounds when they fly so I did some research and found this page:
http://www.brentradio.com/SpaceInvadersSoundRepair.htm

I replaced the 76477 at H2 and that did the trick.

Further reading however revealed that the UFO is supposed to make a sound when you hit it too. Mine has always been silent and I never knew the difference. I looked it up on youtube and sure enough it does.

So, following this guide, I replaced the lm3900's at M5.
No change.
I replaced the 74174 at E5 and the 7417 at F5.
No change.

Anyone know what else I can try?

stupid question but is the sound getting selected to play? can you manually trigger the sound?

I've had the CD4006 at N5 fail in the past.
If you have replaced everything else then that's all that's left.
When going over the sound board I replace the tantalums as well for long term reliability as they occasionally fail as well though I don't believe that's what is causing your issue in this instance, they usually go 'POP' and you will know about it.
