hello all, I recently aquired a space invaders game and when i plugged it in to check the voltage I here a snapping noise coming from the flyback, I looked at the screen and nothing, but there is sound. I started to clean up the motherboard, when I unplugged it the snapping noise went away, as I was inspecting the board, alot of the chips had corrosion on them and as I pulled them out the pins broke off. I checked the voltage and I have proper voltage at the power supply -5, +5 & 12. I am new to this and I was wondering where to go from here...I would assume a new board is in order....or is it worth fixing...and what would the snapping noise be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

2 possibilities here. Either the monitor's flyback is cracked and arcing, or you may have had a tantalum cap on the board go supernova. It happens....and makes a good amount of noise.

If it is the monitor, you can see it happening in a darkened room. As far as the cap going exploda-pop, you'll see black charring under the offending part.

GHS strings rawk btw.

yesss...boomers do the trick..lol. and what would you suggest about the eproms that i pulled out of the board and left half of the plug in the motherboard?...is it easier to trak down a new board or the chips/eproms...sorry if i am not calling them the right thing....thanks for the info on the snapping noise!!

keep the board and get a brase multi game kit, it bypasses the game ROMs and just plugs into the processor

I used it when I got my original Space Invaders that had a game ROM flipped, gives you both Space Invaders and DX, a few other taito games and 2 knockoffs of Space Invaders, as well as enabling freeplay on 6 of the games
