This week I was given a Space Invaders backbox as a birthday present by my girlfriend (thanks Kelly). It's a little worn with some small scratches, but the stencilled art is in really nice shape and the backglasses look beautiful. She got it at a garage sale and the main body and keys are long gone, and as there's little to no hope of a reunite and a complete machine, it's going to make a fun (and large) decoration in the mancave. I will be drilling out the lock this weekend to get inside and poke around.

I thought the infinity effect of the mirrored backglasses was the coolest thing when I was a kid, but it's only effective when it's lit up. Ideally, what I'd like is to get this hooked up to a power source somehow, with the rear bulbs behind the 'alien' backglass working, the LEDs working, and functioning strobes - basically, attract mode. I realize this requires a functioning set of boards; I can see the boards thru the hole in the bottom and once the lock is cracked I'll be able to see if anything's missing, but my abilities to troubleshoot and repair electronics are next to nil, so if somethings shot in there, that's that.

At the very least, short of not having anything lit at all, I'd like the rear and strobe bulbs continuously lit. I'm told I just need to use 5v DC power source, like that of a phone recharger, solder it to the lights (I wouldn't know where though), and they'll light up.

The wiring harness that extended into the main body has been snipped in half, so I don't know if that will preclude powering it up somehow. I've googled to look for someone else who has done this with a backbox for decoration, but found nothing. So, my questions are what, if any, of the above sounds feasible? What kind of power source would be required to power the boards if it's possible to go that route (to get LEDs lit and strobes...um...strobing), or should I just be happy with getting the bulbs lit (and will the strobe bulbs be lit in conjunction with the normal backglass lights)? Where would I connect a power source just to light the bulbs, and is a 5v DC adapter the correct way to go? I'd prefer not to electrocute myself or burn the house down.

Any and all help is appreciated. I won't be cracking the lock till the weekend but I wanted to post this a little early. Thanks all.

Got the lock drilled out and the backbox opened. While lighting it up will still be a project, the main thing right now is getting years of crud off of everything. The inner alien backglass cleaned up beautifully and is in nearly perfect shape. My one concern is the outer backglass. This has a faint mirrored coating printed on the inside, and that coating is covered with dirt, dust, cobwebs, you name it. I don't want to scratch or dissolve the coating anywhere so I don't know what kind of cleaner or solvent to use. Anyone have experience with this particular type of mirrored finish?
