Space Firebird monitor identification

I recently bought a 1980 Space Firebird cocktail cabinet at a garage sale and I've been doing some repair after the previous owner had the kids try to fix it.....

Anyway, the last thing to sort out is the monitor. I attached 2 pictures of the image, one with the brightness turned up, leaving it somewhat washed out (not as bad as it looks in the pic) with what I believe are the "jailbars" that I've heard described. With the brightness down shown in another attached pic, it isn't washed out (blacks are black) but there are very annoying vertical lines that follow anything that isn't in the background (moving objects, writing etc). I believe that this means that it needs a cap kit?

But the biggest question that I have is the previous owner mentioned that the monitor may not be original. As far as I know (which isn't much in this area) the monitor should be a Sanyo 20EZ, though I could be wrong. I attached a picture of the monitor unit out of the cabinet, and does that appear to be the aforementioned sanyo? It's 13" or 14" diagonal, and the tube has the mitsubishi logo on it if that helps (I know tubes come from various sources) but I can't find any other stickers or branding on the thing besides occasional japanese text.

I'm sorry if I'm asking obvious or stupid questions, but I bought the game sort of spur-of-the-moment, and I have no real experience with arcade machines. Any help is greatly appreciated

Bump, I would like to get a cap kit done, but I can't order until I'm sure of the monitor model...

You'll need to get much better pics of the chassis then what you've provided. And you still might not find a model or kit for it. Might have to make your own kit...

Did you have any luck with your quest to determine the monitor model in order to rustle up a cap kit? I coincidentally purchased a Space Firebird cocktail about a week ago, although my version was marketed by Gremlin/Sega -- I'm guessing yours was marketed by Nintendo?

My cocktail has a Mitsubishi -- 370ELB22. I haven't seen anything listed on the Internet by way of a cap kit for a Mitsubishi, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

I just encountered a problem with my own cocktail today; for the first week, the picture was great (after tweaking endlessly with colours and brightness) but now I'm getting garbled graphics; while the picture is still clear, I get half-flickering birds, laser fire that jumps side to side, or misplaced characters in the attract mode. The collision detection works as it did before -- if you know roughly where a flickering bird would normally be and fire away, you're bound to hit it, but the picture is not up to par.

Would this be a "cap kit" scenario, or would you recommend another course of trouble-shooting action, eliminating other possibilities before getting to the kit?

While I'm mildly component, arcade maintenance is a new frontier for me.

That number is a tube number....not a monitor model number. I'm guessing you got that number and the Mitsubishi name from a sticker stuck on the tube?

Mitsubishi made your tube, not the monitor.

Both of you guys have 14" Sanyos in your cocktails, I"m nearly sure of it. Especially the OP. Get the 20EZ cap kit, and you're like 99% there. There's only one or two caps in that kit that aren't direct matches. I just capped a 14" Sanyo a bit back, and I know I posted somewhere which cap was the one that didn't match, but honestly, if you just match and change as many caps as the kit lets you, you'll probably rectify any issues that a cap kit needs to fix.

Hope this info helps!

I've got schematics for the 14EZW (R-B). That may be very similar (or the same) as your monitors. If you need them just let me know.

Edward: Thanks for the clarification regarding the tube vs. monitor

I consulted a scanned copy of the service manual for Space Firebirds (upright) -- among the replacement parts, it cited Gremlin part # 800-0140 for the 19" monitor; I used Google to search for Gremlin 800-0140 monitor -- got a hit on this cite in the following thread dated 2010:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/archive/index.php/t-135715.html

The poster (Stuffmonger) said that for his upright the monitor should be "a Wells Gardner 19" monitor Gremlin part # 800-0140 (which was apparently the same as with Pengo and frogger)."

Looking to a cocktail monitor, does that narrow down the options? I noticed there are many Wells Gardner model cap kits...

The easiest route is to throw a picture up here. These monitors get swapped about.....A LOT. Truefully, it's untelling what's in there:). Snap a picture of the chassis and we'll tell you.

That looks like a Sanyo to me. The 20ez deluxe kit is pretty close as far as a cap kit goes IIRC. I think the audio section is a bit different though. I think it uses 2 of the same transistor instead of 2 different like the 20ez. - Barry
