i am still trying to sell my space duel whole and unparted, but so far no one wants it whole at 400 in reno nv in case anyone wants it.

but what is the big deal in parting any space duel? (i am getting flak for thinking of parting it, what am i supposed to do when it wont sell at 400 but the monitor is worth 300 alone, plus the other parts 200+ and i have no extra storage space and in fact now dont have room to work on anything.)

i have been in this biz/hobby since these were new, and heres the facts about space duel

it was produced in hi 5 figure numbers, i want to say more than 40,000 u/r and 4000+ c/t but im sure one of you know the exact number made. (there is no shortage of them they are not rare)

there was little demand for it from ops and arcades, this was atari pushing quota's on distribs at the height of their power and production. (game was massivly overproduced, in fact most sold at closeout prices of from 695 to 1595 i remember getting a call from a LA distrib in 1982 asking how many i wanted at 695 new in box lol.)
there is also no giant demand for this game from collectors. (there is more demand for its parts than the game, hence the valuations of its monitor, ect)

most will end up as parts store houses for the much better and more collectable
color xy games like star wars, tempest, major havok, quantum, ect.

in fact without space duel as a parts store house for these games most of above would not be working.
as the monitor, power supply, brik, are interchangable in most cases

First, where are you located?

Second, I'm not sure if that's true about the monitor selling for $300 or not. That seems high to me unless it's been completely gone through and bullet-proofed.

Third, it's a lot of work to part a game and sell the parts. To me it's not worth the extra effort to make a couple dollars more.

Fourth, shipping parts is a PITA.

Fifth, don't be stupid. It's a classic. Sell it for $300 and it will sell even in California and you will feel better about yourself as a human being.

He's in Reno... just a wee bit too far for me or I"d be all over it.

Coming to the `ho anytime soon?

Um yep, a 6100 working is worth $300 IMHO. If it is badly burned and hasn't been shopped at all, then I might sell it for $250 or so. Bullet-proofed and upgraded with a LV2000/6100 I sell them for $400. These are extremely time consuming to do properly and fixing all of the previous "repairs" can be a real pain in the rumpus. I have one deflection board I am repairing now that has had 6 incorrect parts put on it and is missing parts and has had some voodoo done to it that I have to undo. People with no clue should leave well enough alone. Thankfully I have parts boards to rob. I will probably have 3 hours or more in this monitor when I am done. So, $300 is definitely fair.

Huh. Maybe I'll start parting games too then. Seriously though, I don't see one selling for that amount where I am. California is strange though.

I don't think any game sells for $400 in Reno. I practically have to give my games away. I am selling a working Pole Position cockpit today and I had to throw in a working Tetris cocktail conversion to get $200 for it. I know I can sell the board for about $150, but I don't use these games to make a living, so it is better for me to to take the hit and sell it whole.

The most I have ever paid for a game in Reno was $300 for a working and pretty nice Defender. I think I lost close to $100 when I sold that one. When I am out of space, or need money to buy a new game, people get great deals.

Send me a PM if you part out. I can use the guts and the monitor. Sad to see a classic toasted. I have been trying to sell a rare low milliage CT Space Duel in near mint shape and no bites at $600 overall. Not worth selling for less in my opinion as again a low milliage WG6100 is $300-$400 alone. Combined with a tough econnomy its a tough deal. If you have storage room put it away for a rainy day! Don't part it out as this hobby should not be about money.

Depending on the condition of the cockpit, someone got a hell of a deal. Especially if it was working.

Kindly get bent, Sir.

Well for one, your numbers are WAAAAY off. Space Duel numbers were in the 11,000's for uprights, and just over 1000 for cocktails (1019, to be exact). So yes, arguably the upright is "common," but your surviving cocktail is far from it - it's relatively rare, incredibly nice, and not a good option for everyone's favorite 60-1 garbage. The only option is to keep it whole.

Secondly, you JUST bought the damn thing. It's no secret you're a parter and flipper first, gamer second (if at all), so you should have plenty of experience sitting on games. 30 days is an absolute MINIMUM for a game to be on the open market before you start considering other options, and parting should be the very last option.

Third : DON'T BUY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
Obviously, you had no intention of keeping the game, and didn't want it in the first place, so why did you buy it? To selfishly harvest it's parts to try and make a quick buck, that's why. And you're wrong for doing it. Period.

OP its your game that YOU bought and transported with YOUR money,if it will help keep other games alive,(and from an earlier post there is intrest) part it. "BUT" your still gonna have the cab hanging around ALOT longer as you attempt to sell parts off of it so your not gonna win a space battle with it,just prolong it.

If you are thinking of parting it out and selling parts on these forums, please make sure to follow the simple and easy requirements of listing it in the last call threads:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=204436

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=188385

Now I'd take these as minimum guidelines. Just because you can part out a game doesn't make it an great outcome for the machine. A common half destroyed machine is one thing if its condition is really sub-par, but a common presentable machine is something else. Every machine destroyed is one less for future generations to enjoy...

Also, I notice you don't have a VAPS profile tied to your account. If you did, you could list your machines there and mark the ones you have for sale (for extra exposure).

space duel

above taken into consideration
and the game is still avail for 400 to anyone who wants it whole

i have myself done plenty to preserve games, heres a few examples

my chosen profession all of the 80's and 90's was like a summary of what this group does as a whole now.
i was passionate about saving and restoring arcade games., and getting them into peoples private game rooms at home.
in so. calif i probably saved/reconditioned and sold about 1000 games over a period of about 10 yrs, to home game rooms,

i networked with arcades and ops there and purchased /reconditioned games to home residential game rooms, many games that the arcade and route ops were about to take to the dump, its hard to imagine the arcade world of 1983, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88 ect. today, but i lived it, the arcade and route ops were bringing to the dump working games like tempest, dragons lair, asteroids, space duel, star castle, space wars, robotron, joust, ect. and pretty much most of the rest of the early 80's games that may have been great games but were not producing enough money in the route or arcade, (pretty much everything except ms pac and galaga) i had to plead with them to sell me these at 100 ea, rather than them paying to take to the dump. (when they brought them to the dump thier accountants could write the whole thing off and not depreciate it anymore, compared to when they sold them i think it cost them more money in tax benefits compared to the 100 sale.) but i got them to sell me hundreds of them this way, and they are now in peoples game rooms to this day., the rest came from the numberous chuck e cheese auctions, arcade out of biz auctions, bankruptcy sales, and games auctions (before super auctions in so cal,) there were a bunch of games auction co's way before super auction, there was in the early 80's (spence rogers auction). (Mcormick auctions) and (jeff from ca robinson) used to auction, and the distribs themselfs used to do auctions. i went to all of these auctions, and saved, restored, and resold to private home game rooms as many games as i could.

i am also responsible for most of the thayers quests in the wild, as the factory (RDI) went bust in 1983 and they sold only a small amount of kits, i purchased at RDI's bankruptcy auction the remaining 210 thayers quest kits and got them ALL into the hands of arcade/route operators, the other person who was the only competing bid against me for the 210 kits was going to do industrial salvage (chip pulling and reselling on pcb's then toss the rest in trash) on them and they would have been lost to the community forever.
