A friend sent me a picture of his Space Duel doing this. He power cycled the game and it was all good. Could that be the beginning of the avg chip going bad or should I look at the monitor? Unfortunately I'm out of town till Friday.

Thanks

Steve

That could be multiple things. However if still it has the original black AVG chip, replace it IMMEDIATELY, as it is a ticking time bomb, and will very likely take out your monitor when it goes (not if it goes, but when). Replacements below. This should be done regardless.

You could also have a separate digital (or possibly even analog) issue. However if it's intermittent like you have seen, it's more likely digital. Start with the AVG. If that doesn't fix it and you want to send it in, feel free to PM me anytime (see my sig below).

My black widow does this time to time. mines a bad fit edge connector. same distorted picture. i got to re-pin it soon.

Had something similar on a Tempest/6100. Check C901/902 in the HV section:

I am having s similar problem with a supposedly "working" space duel board that I got in a trade. Are these chips generic or game specific?

That chip is good for Space Duel. Install away.

The same custom chip is used on all Atari color vector games except Tempest (which doesn't have one).

Any original AVG chip should be replaced.
Thanks, warning heeded, got one on the way(mine's working fine...but as you say.....monitor is looking perfect after rebuild....better to protect it).....will gameboard pots need to be adjusted after installing new one?

Thanks Andy

No. The AVG is a digital chip. The pots control the analog section. You should see no difference in the picture with a new AVG.
Good to hear, got it dialed in nice...SD HSS Free play attract kit coming as well...will install both same time and call it done! Thanks again:)
