I hope I have found the right area of the forum to post on.

Hello. I have had in my possession, for quite some time, a sit down cocktail style Space Duel machine. Everything works with it, most of the time. I sometimes have to hit the side of it to make the monitor come on, and during the player select screen, I see a light dot near the middle, that, isn't part of the designated image for that moment. I am attaching images of the machine and screen.

My question is…

Is the monitor worth trying to do repairs on, being a color vector monitor? How much would it likely cost for a shop to do this? How likely could someone that hasn't done electronic board repair or soldering be able to take this on?

About how much would this machine be worth before repairing the monitor, and after the repair?

This should be in monitor section but yes it is worth repairing, no other choice really, and it seems to be working.

Hard to tell bit center dot with small retrace lines means the flyback screen setting is likely too high. It will burn hole in phosphorus on tube if not adjusted.

banging on game to get monitor to come on sounds like cold solder joints.

Yes you can do most of the repairs needed on this but at a minimum you will need to learn how to safely remove and package boards for repair.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum.

Do yourself a favor and take some time to familiarize yourself with the Advanced Thread Search function here.

There are 20+ years of discussions archived here, and the answers to just about any questions you can have already exist in the archives (including many about Space Duel, vectors, and 6100 color monitors). All vector games have a common set of issues that you should read about and understand, as addressing them fixes a lot of issues. And it's all been discussed here, many times already.

In your case, your monitor is still mostly working, so you should be able to fix them with minimal effort. It will require learning basic soldering, but that can be done with a 10-minute youtube tutorial video.

Start by searching for threads here with 'Space Duel' in the title. Then try '6100'. That will get you hundreds of threads with repair info, a lot of which are going to say the same things.

Yes, the game is worth repairing. But only if you plan on keeping it. Otherwise if you want to make a buck, just sell it as it is, and let another collector restore it properly. Getting these vector games working is one thing, keeping them working is another. Especially if you have one that has been sitting in storage for a long time.

This is a DIY repair.
I doubt here are any "repair" shops that will touch this monitor.
Might be as simple as reducing the brightness and R/G/B cutoff(s), doing a capkit, and resoldering the headers etc.

Not comfortable doing this? Then put up a ForSale post in the correct section. :)

Since the game does not really need "repair", the value is the same, IMHO.
The major issue is the missing top glass. The value is under the low-end listed on Exidy or VAG.

"Fonzie Test" suggests bad solder joints. Not exactly a surprise for a 6100.

For the OP, if that monitor is fully working, it would go for the vicinity of $1,000 all by itself. If not, as long as the tube is intact, it would sell for $500 and up any day of the week. But, you should put a post in the Price Checks forum to get more info on that...

Thanks everyone for the replies. Lots of replies with great info.

I don't want to part with it, but I may put it up for sale. No one else wants to play it, but me. lol.

I will also do searching on Space Duel and 6100 monitors.
