Space Duel Monitor not working after road trip home.

I bought a Space Duel while I was out of town with a uhaul trailer. It came back with me in the bouncy trailer. It got hammered more than a few times.

When I picked it up, it worked great except for blooming on the monitor. I was just going to replace the HV diode to fix that.

When I got home, I turned it on, and the tube neck glows, I hear lots of deflection chatter, and the screan is blank, and plays blind. I turned up the brightness, and a colorful thin, bright, vertical line cuts through the screen.

Any ideas? I checked and reseated all the usual connectors with no help? If the hard ride cracked or damaged the picture tube, would I be getting a line on the screen? I assume if I damaged the tube, it would of emploded or not worked at all.

Thanks
Rick

Rick, is the vertical thin bright line like the one I've got at the end of this video clip I took of my monitor? FF to the end.

My monitor will work for awhile, then pop, and a vertical thin bright line cuts down the center and all is black. Is that the same line you're getting?

I've been told it's a loose solder joint and I need to re-solder everything (again). Could be the same for you?

I had the same thing happen to an Asteroids Deluxe. It turned out to be the connectors on either side of the HV diode had separated (vibrated loose?). I went ahead and put a new diode in when I fixed the connectors, and used cable ties to hold the assembly together so it wouldn't happen again (never really liked the "glob of silicone" fix...). It has been working fine ever since.

Check the wiring and sockets going from the deflection board to the chassis mounted transistors. Chances are its in there somewhere. You are not far from working.

Yes, I agree, the plugs bump up and down in a trailer, and can crack the solder going to plugs and headers

Reflow the solder, and it should fix it

I am not sure what the plugs and headers are. I know the chassis transistors, and the deflection board. What solder joints are you referring too that I need to reflow? Do I just heat them up, and then add a little new solder?

I assume I would know if I cracked the tube by now?

Thanks
Rick

Your tube is fine. Do what brick top said. It would be better to rebuild monitor if it hasnt been done already

going to replace HV diode to start

I need to change the HV diode, which means I need to discharge the monitor first. I normally just short the annode directly to the frame. Do I need to put resistors in the line. I had heard that prevents damage. Any truth to that.

Instead, could I leave it off for a day or two, then discharge with no resistors?

Thanks

No resistors are needed to discharge :)
