Hey folks,

I'm new here and need advice. I recently aquired Space Duel at an estate sale, the guy wanted $500 but I kept coming back and on the last day was able to talk him down to $200.

It is in pretty good shape but the two 5 amp fuses on the card by the monitor blow, I think one of your forum members called it a deflection board or something like that.

It does power up, the bezel light comes on but the fuses blow before it gets a chance to power up, both of them. I can see the main picture tube is on because it does light up where it is connected.

Here are my options

Easy fix (If any of you know what the issue is), clean it up and put it in my office for fun.

or

Gut it and sell the parts and turn the cabinet into a MAME machine (Don't know if MAME is a bad word around here since it's not really an original arcade but it is an option to recycle the machine).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! MAME and Space Duel should not be in the same post unless the word "Dont" is in front of it.

Anyways, head over to the repair forums and our Gurus will make sure you get this machine working tip top.

So do you have a picture of the cabinet? I don't think I have ever seen a picture of a conversion Space Duel.

Does the machine coin-up and play blind ( no monitor output). I would disconnect the Molex connector on the monitor - assuming this 'conversion' has one. The chassis on the monitor can likely be repaired. If this is a dedicated game, the last thing on your mind should be making it a MAME cabinet - or we will hunt you down. :)

As was suggested, goto the help forum and ask there.

You have a potentially nice game on your hands. A picture of it would be great.

Welcome to the forum. :)

Maybe im being dense, but where does he say its a conversion??

I misread the last part of his post- he meant that a mame machine is not an original arcade game. I thought initially he meant the SD machine as it currently was. My mistake. Thanks for asking. :)

Yes fix it! This is a vector right? Not really a good candidate for MAME. Not that any classic is. There are plenty of empty cabs and jamma cabs with crappy games in them to convert to MAME if you feel you must go that route. Please either fix this one or sell it whole to someone who will fix it. I'm sure you could find someone to trade you a nice jamma cab that would be good for MAME in exchange for this rather than part it and MAME it.

It's probably not a tough fix, so please fix the monitor, keep it and enjoy it. MAMEing should be reserved for cabinets that have already been converted, have no chance of being restored or were originally poker machines (big grin!).

The most common cause for f100 and f101 to blow on the deflection PCB is a shorted bridge rectifier.

Ok, inside the cab is every manual. Instruction manual, setup manual, and maintenance manual. Also some coin stickers for cost per play. I'm no electrician but have done some small soldering on computers (replace a cap, or power connector, etc.) Is it easy to replace a shorted bridge rectifier? And, where is it? Is it on the deflection PCB?

Thanks

You can buy an upgrade modification for the monitor to prevent this from happening in the future for about $30. The easiest way to fix it would be to discharge the monitor, remove the deflection PCB, and send it to someone like Modessitt to repair and put an LV2000 (mod mentioned above) on the board.

You should press the game select button and then start on the CP to see if you hear the game start. If so, you can fix it yourself or send it out. Just some simple soldering and troubleshooting is needed. If you can use a Multi-Meter, people here will help you step by step... If your game, start a thread in the repair section with WG6100 in the title as that is the monitor that you would normally have in that game.

Here is a link to a blog post about fixing the 6100 on a Space Duel that had gone out.

http://web.mac.com/darrick.deel/Site/Main/Entries/2007/8/18_Space_Duel_Monitor_Repair.html

The LV2000 I mentioned was used in the repair.

If you want to MAME something, sell that thing dead for more than you paid to someone that wants to repair it. Then you have more than enough to buy a nice four player cabinet with the right type of monitor for mame. ;)

Edit: And tell us where you are located as someone on here may be close enough to help you out.

I say it's yours and do what you want. This site is about preservation not MAME so of course you'll get the answer to "Restore" it.

Vector monitors are an evil animal. I highly suggest this not be the first monitor you take on. These K6100's always seem to kick my ass.

I'm located in Oklahoma City and I am game to sell it or trade for a good MAME cabinet. I have a 19" monitor for MAME, it should be great for it. I was trying to get a 21" but couldn't find one local.

I also have a good p4 to run it too.

I did try pressing both buttons to try to get into diag mode but didn't hear anything. I did notice that the coin parts were missing, if that isn't connected would that prevent the game from starting? All I have is the connector off the main wiring harness and the front plate for the coin slots.

I was also worried about how old the side graphics looked, kinda brown but I wipped it down and came out pretty nice. The marquee is in excellent condition and replace the marquee bulb and starter and they now work great. No other lights come on and no sound as of yet.

There is a switch inside the top coin door that might be flipped. It puts it in test mode which would keep the game from starting. So you might check that. Are the LEDs on the start buttons solid or is one blinking? You don't need the coin electronics. The game can be set on free play or you can push the button inside the top coin door near the volume pot and the test switch.

Not that I need a third space duel, but OKC isn't that far from me. :D

I've tried setting it into test mode and don't get anything. No lights at all but the marquee. I can hear the hum from the power supply but don't know what else I can do to see if this is fixable (at my level that is).

You have to make sure the boards and monitor are getting power.

Make sure any of the safety interlocks are pulled out.

Then check the fuses in the bottom of the cab, the AC line fuse and the power supply fuses.

Use a continuity setting on the meter to make sure the fuses are good, don't just eyeball them. If the fuses are good, clean the and the clips on the fuse holders, and make sure all of those wires look good.

Have you found the Oklahoma Coin-Operated Collector's forum? http://forum.okcoin-op.com/ I would ask there about a trade before you decide to MAME it.

Do not get discouraged though. The guys here on KLOV can help you with just about any repair you are willing to attempt.
