Does this exist? I know it has a free play setting but it just sits at the seletion screen.

Mine seems to work fine with the DIP setting, as do most Atari games. If you hit a player select, then it will sit on that screen until you start a game. Don't hit a player select button and it should cycle thru the attract mode.

mine does not cycle through any mode as it sits on free play.
bugs me actually. seems like it's going to give the monitor some burn.

Mine does not either. It already has burn from the selection screen. I keep it on quarters so it goes through the attract screens.

I would like to have freeplay with attract, but I don't even think it's possible. When you put a quarter in, it goes to the selection screen and the select button blinks. Then you press start when you've made your selection. How would freeplay with attract work? The screens would have to cycle through attract while the select button is blinking. Pressing select once would bring it to the selection screen with the first option selected and subsequent presses would change the selection.

Yes, it does exist.

Care to elaborate? ;) I'm gonna be getting all my games on free play shortly, and I know some have a pretty crappy free play like this where it sits at the game select screen. But, it's just a good as keeping them coined up I guess, since that just sits on the same screen :p .

Yes...doooooo tell. Links or it never happened!

Well, there's no link because I am to lazy to build a web site for all of my hacks!

The ROMs were built for CAX but a last minute Space Duel cabinet swap left them behind this year. When I get around to unpacking the games I'll post a video.

We don't want a video... we want the modified ROMs ;) . BTW, what other hacks have you done? I've done/been doing a few, but yeah... too lazy to do make a web site for them. I was just gonna email Tim ( http://www.arcadecollecting.com/hacks.html ) or Mark ( http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/ ) if either of them would post them on their hacks page (especially since if I put them up, it's unlikely that anyone will find them, since my site would be new and unpopular, so google would rate it poorly).

I'm contemplating bringing mine in to work for a while, and this would greatly reduce the burn the monitor will sustain. Even the diffs/patches, (or where to look in the disassembled code!) would help.

Did anyone ever get this figured out? I just got a space duel and hate the fact it sits in the selection screen when the free play dipswitch is set...

I was actually thinking about this the other day as well... I'll probably hack it next time I get some free time, though if xray2 posts his, of course that'd be prefered so I don't waste time repeating his work.

You guys really think your going to get burn with home use?? I thought burn was caused by games running 12 hour days 7 days a week. If you just want the attract screen running in free play then I understand.

Not really worried about burn in, I don't usually leave my Vectors on for a long time, when I have guests they may stay on for a few hours max.. but it definitely sucks to constantly have the selection screen showing, and I would say that's my main reason for wanting a hack.

Plus when they are not familiar with Space Duel, the attract gives them a clue what the game is about, where the select screen doesn't really help much.
