Went to play my game yesterday and the sound is missing, you can hear the speakers working and when you adjust the volume pots you can hear a change. I thought it might be the audio amp but since the speakers do adjust when you turn the pot I am thinking it might not be. The amp is a tda2030, the board is an atari audio board on an escape from the planet of the robot monsters. Any ideas?

probably NOT the amp. I would look at the input to the amp. and I will bet there is nothing there. Follow the schematics back from the amp. to the source of the audio.

Also check the voltages to the board at the chips.

As you can faintly hear the sounds when the amp is turned up it is likely to be failing caps in the amp section of the board. Ideally you would run an ESR test on them to find which are bad, it is unlikely to be more than a couple.

If the amplifier heatsink getting extremely hot?

Sounds like a cap issue or a bad solder joint. I'm leaning towards caps.

The Neo Geo boards will do that - no sound then suddenly sound appears - when the caps are going south in the audio section.

Funny thing fired up the game today and no sound, I will change the caps and see if that works. I wil also see if the heatsink gets extremely hot.
