Sometimes the deal is just too good... re: Tempest in Indy for $100

Can't win them all, eh?

I called about 10 minutes after it was posted and was in the truck 5 minutes later. I called him once I was on the road to let him know I was on my way. When he didn't answer, I just pulled over and tried him again. When he answered my fourth call I knew then the auction was on! I guess I just didn't want it enough to get in a bidding war all the way to his house. I turned around and got a sandwich on the way home. Congrats to whomever got it. :)

and the sellers who take more money, and the people who offer it, are douchebags.

Seriously. If they want an auction, say so in the ad. Nothing wrong with saying 'best offer' or telling callers 'well, it's at $100 now, I'm giving it a day and see what I get'. But selling it out from under someone who is on the way is just jerky.

Wow...in the truck and headed there and they pulled that? They are lucky you didn't continue the drive and knock out their teeth before you headed home.

This is my second time like this, but I didn't get anywhere near as tweaked about it. The first time the guy was a real piece of work.

Tonight the young man was straight up honest and said "I need the money."

In all fairness I have gotten treated really well by folks on CL list too :) folks in Lafayette on two seperate occasons held a machine based on a phone call agreement and a guy in Northern Indiana sold me my frogger even when he had folks calling him while we were talking offering him more. So who can complain :)

why would you stop and pull over to keep calling? or keep calling in the first place? You show up, hand him the agreed upon money, and load up the game

I live northwest of Indy and the machine was on the opposite corner (SE side). He was also on the NW side (Castleton). When I called him to make the deal, we agreed that I would call him as I neared Castleton so he'd be sure to leave accordingly and be able to meet me on the southside. The traffic can vary a bit in Fishers due to construction and that time of day so that isn't unreasonable.

It was when he didn't answer that first call that I pulled off then, I didn't see the point of driving the 70 mile round trip just to get to the other side and not get an answer.

I sometimes overstate how far I am driving from just so potential sellers find it easier to sell to me at the stated price than to have some guy who just spent 4 hours and $125 in gas driving to his house from causing a scene.

That sucks. I have a cab I have agreed to buy locally off of CL but I can't pick it up until Wed. I am just waiting for a text saying he sold it to somebody else even though he said it was mine.

I have already told myself I won't get too mad if it happens ;)

I've bartered (down) prices but have never seen a deal like that one. In fairness, CL has worked out well for me most times in-state. Several people I've worked with have held games and honored agreements.

Regardless of people offering me more than I offer in my ad when I'm a seller, I never take it. It's just not right in my opinion. However as a buyer, it happens to me all the time. I refuse to play by those rules.
