I normally try not to sell on CL that much but I thought I would throw up one of my Trons to see if I could get any bites. Had it listed at 1000 but figured I would be lowballed to 7-800 roughly. Anyway I get this email and of course I responded but would this have annoyed anybody here? Feedback much appreciated and i'll post my response.

** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY
** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home
** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping

I know you will instantly reject this offer, but this is in the event that no other buyers emerge, which might happen. I'll put up $200. I'm not looking to turn a profit or anything, i just want to play a classic game, but that price is not worth it. Arcade machines aren't too good of investments especially in this economy even with collectors. The movie that came out doesn't add much value to it either. That kind of buzz died months ago, and the movie didn't even do too well, plus this is a 30 year old piece of machinery; maintenance alone is going to screw me in the end. Arguably Space Invaders is sought out as much as Tron, but i've seen the same guy posting the same machine 4 times and still no one is taking his asking price of 400.

he wants to play a classic game? have him come over with a handful of quarters and have at it...

I can see why you're annoyed...it is like the person is trying to "educate" you on what you have...and this person has no idea what level of knowledge you have on arcade machines.

Rather than a long-winded response, I'd just simply say "thanks for your offer, I decline." Not worth getting into a pi$$ing battle over email...or raise your blood pressure over it...

Thank you my thoughts exactly but my response was sort of mean in a sense.

Hilarious!!! What a complete tool that guy is. I'd tell him if he wants to play a classic game, check out Chuck e Cheese, bound to be a few there still.

Quite frankly I think these games are worth much more than we often sell them for. Think about it, thirty years old.

My limit for buying a game on CL is $250 bucks. I have access to any machine I want to "borrow" from my buddy, so I never really have to buy anything. Because of my meeger limit of game price, I know there is no point to ever try and search out Star Wars, Tron, Donkey Kong, Crazy Taxi, etc, etc. These machines are way out of my price range, and apparently way out of his. The idiot still shoots you the lowball offer anyways. What a waste of your email inbox. And on top of that the guy has to hurl insults to try and justify his lowball/ poorman price range? Fuck that. I'd list his email address in a Man seeking Man ad on my local CL.

My response

Ok so it may have been out of line but I felt my response was necessary

Not sure I quite understand this but if you know I will instantly reject this offer than why bother? Honestly $200 would not buy you a control panel off of this game. Do the math on these 3 items and with shipping its close to $800.00

If arcade games are not good investments than why bother? If you think the movie did not add value to the game you are extremely wrong. The game jumped up extremely after the movie from a 500 game to well over 1000. The last 3 machines SOLD on ebay sold for $1100 $1250 $1499. The machine was produced in 82 so it does'nt make it 30 years old yet but either way it is old. Maintenance? The game works so what maintenance are you talking about? Its not like it needs a weekly marquee light change or a board tune up. Comparing a space invaders, ms pacman, centipede, etc. to a tron is not logical either as those games pop up not working for less than 300 on a weekly basis. Space Invaders is not sought out I just sold a working one for $150. and people were not knocking down my door. I have been collecting for well over 15 years and this has probably been the worst attempt to lowball someone yet. I just feel bad for people that are unaware that you try this on. I know a large majority of the collectors in southern and northern california and i'll make sure that they see this email as it has upset me. An offer of 200 would have had a simple reply of thanks but not interested but the senseless wording after was highly unecessary.

I'll see your "Sometimes selling on craigslist is annoying" and raise it to "Selling on craigslist is ALWAYS annoying"

Isn't Mr. Trent a member here? I think he is from Fresno? Maybe he didn't know it was you.

Would be hilarious if it was someone here...
A few weeks ago I remember a post here suggesting ways of talking a craigslist seller down from a high price and had a few suggestions of lowballing by "educating" the seller how little their game was really worth.

While I think $1000 is a great deal on a Tron, I think it would be hilarious if this guy took those suggestions to the extreme not realizing he was dealing with someone on here :D

Also makes you wonder how many old ladies get swindled out of their husband's old games(I also recently saw someone here who grabbed a working UR Galaga AND a working UR Ms Pac I believe for something like $50 or $100 for both). Though you can't really fault a buyer when the seller chooses not to educate themselves before selling an item....if that guy hadn't bought them, someone else would have been standing in line behind him to pay the same...

Now if I could only find a nice $30 working Popeye or Pacmania, I'd be set!

BTW....I'll go as high as $250 if your $220 offer falls through....BWAHAHAHA

Excellent well thought out response. I don't think I would have wasted the time though. Unless it was a non-working roughed up Tron missing parts $200 gets you nothing, not even a reply.

I wonder if this is a scam:

http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/vgm/2630800504.html

I had one years ago, in fact it was the only game I owned from around 1993 until 1998 when I sold it and got out of collecting for several years. I think I sold mine for $300 in 1998 and it took a while. It was in very good original condition. Tron looks cool but no way would I ever pay $1000 for one. But that's just my opinion.

I'm totally with you Kalan. It makes me grind my teeth when I get those emails.

I don't mind them offering $200, but it's where they try to justify that that's really what an $800 to $1000 game is worth that's annoying. Sometimes I'll reply politely, but usually I'll just wait until it sells for $800 and then reply and inform him it already sold for $800.

Point #2 - he's definitely planning on re-selling. Wouldn't surprise me if it's that guy out in Murietta who gets in flame wars here who buys and re-sells for a profit. Clearly the person doesn't know that you're a person with a clue.

Point #3 - I'll give you $300. :)

(jk - Tron is definitely worth $800, but not to me).
