For weeks, I've posted on RGP, KLoV and the Stern forums...have checked with a few operators and techs...checked with a few distributors...scoured eBay and Craigslist...checked several online parts resources...and I'm simply coming up with nothing. :(

I refuse to believe that either of the parts listed below are simply NOWHERE to be found in the U.S.

  • Power transformer -- part # 010-5011-00
  • Wiring adapter -- part # 036-5445-00
C'mon, somebody be a hero and dig one of these items up for me!

And still nothing...

Every Stern distributor I've contacted has yet to call me back with "Yes, we have that!", eBay/Craigslist is consistently worthless, as is KLoV/RGP/Mr. Pinball/Stern forums and all of the online parts dealers like Marco, Pinball Life, Bay Area, etc., etc. (Haven't heard from Steve at Florida Pinball Salvage either.)

I've even checked with Todd at TNT and a few operator/flipper folks around town, and its been a complete bust.

Was the damn transformer used in Twister made out of stem cells or something?

playpin35 and I were discussing a replacement transformer for his Starship Troopers. I imagine it uses a similar if not identical transformer to Twister. We came to the conclusion that Stern's -01 transformer is basically identical to the transformers used in the Sega Whitestar games. The main difference is the Stern version lowered the GI voltage to 5.7 volts instead of 6.3. I imagine Stern did this to increase bulb life. The only thing run off this voltage is the GI, so the lower voltage won't matter other than give you less heat and you'll replace bulbs less often. Maybe shoot playpin35 a PM and see if he's had any luck finding a source for the transformer. I think he did, but it wasn't cheap.

As for Steve at FPS, I've had the best luck when he saw one of my requests for parts and he responded to me. The one time I emailed him out of the blue for a part I got no response. So I'd say if he hasn't responded, he may not have it. But you never know, if you don't have any luck finding one, you may want to try hitting him up again.

I had a similar idea. Just find out what voltages it's producing and buy a transformer or transformers to satisfy that requirement.

I've got the transformer from "Cut the Cheese Deluxe" (which is the machine I pulled the Whitestar boards from to put in Twister), and while it's an exact match for my other Sega Whitestar game from the same era (X-Files), the large 15-pin connector doesn't match up to the wiring harness in Twister. *see attachment*

Pat at Stern told me to try adapter
# 036-5445-00 to make the connection, but I have yet to find it anywhere.

I'm thinking I should get creative, comparing the the voltages from the Cut the Cheese/X-Files transformer to the Twister wiring harness, and if things match up, making my own adapter to make the connection.

Hope you can get it taken care of easily.

First thing I'd do is measure the voltages on the transformer from the Cut the Cheese game or check its schematics if you have them. As long as the voltages matched what Twister needs, I'd just buy new connectors and repin the game and transformer so everything matches up correctly. I imagine all the necessary voltages are present since you said that Cut the Cheese is a Whitestar game. More work, but much cheaper than buying a new transformer.

I don't have any schematics for Cut the Cheese, but its transformer is identical to the one in The X-Files (# 010-5012-00) and I have the schematics for that game.

With my X-Files manual and Twister manual, I just might be able to figure this out. :)

I think you can. If I get a chance (and they are available at IPDB), I'll download both the manuals and take a look. And if all else fails, sounds like you may have a source for a transformer that will work as a backup plan.

Edit: Crap, neither manual is available for download.

My original X-Files manual has the wiring diagrams in it, but the repro Twister manual I ended up having to buy from Marco does not.

The wiring diagrams make up the last section in the Twister manual, and apparently, they're not important enough to have been included in the reproductions.

Comparing the transformer wiring page from Twister to the X-Files transformer wiring page, both transformers seem to be the same -- except for that one connector size. (The Cut the Cheese transformer I have is the exact same model used in the X-Files.)

Any protips on how to go about joining that large 15-pin connector (from the Cut the Cheese transformer) to the smaller 15-pin connector in Twister?
