Some random thoughts on a Quantum singularity (#358 of 500)

Got a tip from a fellow collector about an operator who needed a hand clearing some space and was in the mood to sell some of the 80's stuff he had stashed away.

(If you know me, it isn't the guy whom I've been working with the last few years. Never met this fellow.)

It's normally about 90 mins from me, but I'm usually game for at least taking a look, and was on the way back from another errand. Almost didn't go. Was already behind schedule, had a game in the truck, had been driving for hours, yada - yada - yada.

Glad I did make the detour.

Besides meeting a really great hard-working collector/operator/handyman/etc, I got to see and play a game so rare (or underappreciated?) that there aren't any current VAPS owners (Star Guards).

In addition, after a couple trips and a day of moving games around in sheds in the 90+ degree heat this week, I came away with 4 games for a very nice price.

Major Havoc - converted space duel
Aeroboto - Converted Stargate cab
Ghosts & Goblins - Converted Robotron
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition (Acclerator pt.2 roms) - Converted Quantum

That's right, QUANTUM, and someone didn't even have the respect to put a proper Capcom marquee on it. :)

It's a good day when you can walk away with a couple Williams cabs, a Major Havoc in the most beautiful Space Duel cab (there is one scratch on the art), and a Quantum with 90% of the sideart intact.

Quantum is one of those games that I only heard about when looking through vector roms after MAME came out. Never saw one BITD, never played it, wasn't on my radar. Still haven't actually played a working one.
It holds no nostalgic value for me. Doesn't mean that I even thought for a second about passing it up!

So now, even though I have already sold the cab (minus the SF2 stuff), for that one brief moment, that tiny sliver of time, I was able to make contact with a singular Quantum...

Side note: Was sold to someone with the understanding that he would do everything in his power to have it ready for MAGFest in a couple years. I'm already swamped with projects and just wouldn't be able to give it the attention that it needs. I still want to play it!!! :)

Original parts

Nice cabs. Good luck with the project.. Did you ask the op what happen to the original parts?

I asked him to keep an eye out for them, but he sheepishly admitted that they may have been thrown out decades ago.
Easy to criticize now, but there were piles of tubes and boards laying around, and who knew that people would care 25 years later?

Neat. All 4 of those cabinets are worth converting back. As much as has been thrown out, there's still Quantum parts out there, and with the repro stuff, I'd like all of the remaining cabinets to be restored back to working games! Great find and glad someone is saving it.

Yeah, he is going to get one of the blank PCBs just in case he can't find another one. Control panels can be repaired, artwork is available, etc... Just more than I thought I could deal with in a timely manner. Suffering from a little burnout. :p

Besides, he is building a proper gameroom so it would be in a nice place instead of languishing in my garage.

Was the op willing to sell the star guards or did you simply have no interest ?

I don't have space and even though it's kinda cool, I wasn't interested. The guy who tipped me off is probably going to get it and might even try to get it up to ACAM since it is so rarely seen.

I would volunteer to help him look/cleanup. you know what to look for, he probably does not. He probably did throw it away, but if you find the amp stuff, or a quantum board, its worth a days work. Even if you don't find what you want, you probably will find some good stuff.

Nice pickup and definitely some good title games to bring back to life especially the Quantum.

It's amazing how many converted Quantums turn up. I got two for free several years ago, both within a month of each other. One of the cabs disintegrated (was outside for too long) but I got some decent hardware out of it. I have all the parts including completed repro board, to finish the other cab but haven't gotten to it yet. Quantum is a great game.

Well, I'm looking forward to playing it after someone else goes to the trouble of getting it working :)

the guy I am selling to lives about 90mins away so there will be multiple trips.

De Jamma-tized

Spent some time in the heat (soaked!) de-jammatizing it. Thought I'd share a couple more pics

Working out in the heat is no fun. :( It was 104+ this past week.. Finally caved in and bought a AC. It's worth it.

Nice cabinets man! Enjoy working on those projects.
