good lord. I picked up a 77 williams hot tip(em version) today..

the backglass is starting to peel in a few spots, " a little touchup and clear will handle this" i thought..

made the deal, took the machine apart to transport and........

theres about a mile of masking tape holding in the art... apparently whoever used to own it saw the paint peling and thougt that mashing tape would make the ultimate art preservation product...

so now i have a backglass thats always going to look dirty thanks to this yellowing mashing tape behind it. I dont dare peel it off... I can see mad things happening in the future when this tape and the art starts peeling off in sheets... should i triple thick the masking tapE?? LOL

I've seen that too may times. Apparently it was considered a good option at some point. I wouldn't clear over the tape ;)

I've been sealing glasses less and less lately with the stories I've been hearing of increased risk of peeling with temperature change. Unless there's flaking or other problems that need to be addressed. Then you don't have a choice. I don't see myself clearing minty original glasses anymore though.

My father-in-law "repaired" the air bag light on his Taurus by putting black electrical tape over the words "air bag" so you can't see them flash any more. The funny thing is that it totally appeased my mother-in-law.

That's a great idea. I think I'll try it with the stupid red check engine light on my Corolla. Damn that thing is annoying.

Homer Simpson already does that.

As to doing a clear coat over the masking tape..... DON'T DO IT. It will make the tape lift and curl thus ruining the artwork.

Was just about to start a thread along these lines. I've got a pretty good glass on my Space Shuttle that I just bought, but you can tell it's STARTING to bubble in a few places towards the bottom adn there's hard-to-see cracking (May not be so hard to see once I get the GI fixed...) and I'm trying to figure a way to stop it in it's tracks.

heres some pics of the kid at work helping me clean it up..

In the last pic, he kept playing with the door key and i was afraid he might lose it. SO i calmy explained to him i was afraid he would lose the key so we locked it up and i took away the key. WIthin 5 seconds he finds a screwdriver and tries to open the lock with it LOL..

If this is how he treats locks already, i can see some fun times ahead in his teenage years..

Looks like a nice clean game. You can always remove the bulbs in the area where the masking tape is. Unless it is everywhere.

its everywhere..(the tape) the pf looked like it was totally gone, but it was mostly dirt. there is some wear by the "hot" and "tip" that needs to be touched up before it gets worse but shes cleaning up well. I tried something new on this, zep non streaking surface cleaner in a can.. let me tell ya, it worked great. It did try to eat the green paint a little so fyi, its pretty damn strong. I still plan on a total teardown touchup and polish rubbers etc but for now i wanted to do a quick cleaning and see what all i had to do to make it playable.

Its up and running. Most of the bell coils would stick on and it wouldnt register points either... had dirty contacts at some relays in the back of the backbox.(the points relays) also all the steppers were sticky etc, the typical krap you see on old ems... i love ems. A couple hours of cleaning and adjusting and your done. Cant do that with a acid damaged ss ...(unless youre rich ha) the coin switches were all jacked up and the ball return switch and wire were all effed up.. of course the guy said " when i went and got it it played fine" Yeah bullshit mabye 30 years ago heh..

Hehehe. Reminds me of my buddy's old Plymouth Neon. The "Check Engine" light was always on, along with another light. My friend would say that the other light was just the signature of the guy in India that designed the dashboard (Mr. Door Ajar). He'd also get in the car, put the key in the ignition, say "Engine?", start the car, and say "Check!". He kept several bottles of oil in the back seat, as he had to top it off every time he got out of work.

As for the masking tape on the backglass... I don't know what you really can do, other than hope the backing falls off the tape and leaves the old adhesive. Masking tape adhesive is terrible to remove, even from hard plastic surfaces - I have no idea if it's possible to remove it from the delicate paint layer.

I have a pin that has an almost perfect backglass except for the bottom portion had cracked and almost peeled off. Someone decided to slap a piece of masking tape over it to hold it in place. It was like that when I got it 10+ years ago and it's still like that to this day.

I would never condone this type of fix but I will say that it has held up with no problems; this game has been in basements as well as garages, never really in temperature controlled environments.

Just my $0.02
