So, I just picked up my first neogeo cab and I have a couple questions for people who are more knowledgeable then myself.

It is an original dedicated cab (MVS-1 dedicated pretty sure) and has a one slot board in it (JAMMA). However the CPO has a game select button, that is wired up, just resets the game since there is no other game to switch to. Why would that be on there?

Also, there is a section under the CP with a memory card slot, and two headphone jacks. However, there is nothing inside the cab in that area. Is it one part I am missing, or multiple? What does it look like/what is it called?

Finally, the board is marked JAMMA, yet it is my understanding that the other Neogeo boards are not JAMMA. What would it take to put a 2, 4, or 6 board in the cab?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a picture of your cab? It would be easier to identify exactly which model it is. hardmvs.com is a great resource if you're new to MVS.

If the CPO has a game select button, then most likely a multiple slot board was installed in it at some point OR it may be a conversion CPO that was installed that just happens to have the game select button.

The headphone/memory card slot is a small PCB that is mounted inside the CP that has two harnesses running out of it to the MVS board. This feature was only compatible with certain MVS boards if I remember correctly.

1-slot boards are standard JAMMA. Multiple slot boards are not.

Here you go. Took some quick photos with the cell phone in my dark garage with the work light on. The only identification sticker on the back of any kind is one for 3-Koam, a picture of which is also included.

Will try to get some better pictures when I have time during the day.

In the middle of cleaning it up so I have all the buttons pulled, as well as the marque.

That's a dedicated MVS-2-25. Out of factory, that came with a 2-slot board. My guess is that the board went bad along the way and someone swapped it with a 1-slot board. At the same time, probably removed the memory card PCB/harness as it wasn't compatible.

Which is a 1-slot board. Like I said, somewhere along the way, someone swapped the original 2-slot board out.

Oh, was in no way doubting you. Was providing more information. Still curious about what it would take to put another MVS board in there.

On a similar note, why do you think hitting the game select button causes the board to reset the game? I took a quick look at the pinouts and I would think the game select button would have no effect on the MV-1.

Most likely because the harness is wired for the original 2-slot board and when you plug in the 1-slot board, something is not registering right. Or it's looking for the next game and not finding it. That's just my guess.

But if you're going to keep the 1-slot board in there, there's no point in even pressing the game select button. I would just unhook it. Actually, if it were me, I'd try to find a 2-slot board to replace the 1-slot board that's in there and restore it to its original form.

I was wrong about the memory card/headphone harness not being compatible though. According to the MV-1 manual (http://hardmvs.com/manuals/MV-1.pdf), you should be able to plug in a memory card/headphone harness just fine. Here is the manual for your cab which contains info about the original board that was taken out: http://www.hardmvs.com/manuals/MVS-2-25.pdf.

It's not resetting. It's looking for the next cart. There no longer is a second cart since you've got the 1-slot in there.

I agree.. either put a 2-slot back in there or plunger up the game selector button.

Yup, saw that, that's why I sent payment to you for the harness ;)

I agree. However, that is why i am confused. Why would the 1 slot board even look for the next cart.

Not sure dude. Just sell the 1-slot and get a 2-slot board instead. Problem solved. :D

When in doubt, PM super moderator/MVS board guru channelmanic (That's how it's spelled. It's not channelmaniac) for all your MVS board needs. He's the man. He runs www.arcadecomponents.com and does various board repairs.

Alright, new question.

How is the marquee supposed to be lit?

Mine just has a standard fluorescent bulb, but in my search for information I have seen light boards for lighting the mini marquees.

So, how are the 2-slot and or 1-slot marquees supposed to be lit?

I have a question.

Since that cab most likely has the non-JAMMA harness for the 2-slot board, can it damage the 1-slot JAMMA pcb?

From my research I would say no. The only difference between the MVS pinout and the JAMMA pinout really is the -5 and the sound.

Since the 1 slot also does not use -5 and the sound is stereo, there are no issues.

Others can feel free to correct me though.

The multiple slot cabs have lit mini marquees that use EL bulbs. Most are burned out/depleted by now and it's very rare to find a cab that has them working. There are guys that have done/found replacements by either finding old panels that still work or replacing them themselves.

Example:

It isn't be cheap either way so a lot of guys just install a fluorescent bulb that lights up the whole marquee.

Awesome, thanks for all the help.

When using my tutorial from over there remember that Being Seen is out of business. You will have to source panels from elsewhere. You need the dual-node kind of EL panels. Do some searches here and there. People have used different panels and had success.

A6 panels.

$20 each.

I just did all 4 on my 4-slot.

Here is the size difference between the original EL panels and the A6 panels:

Here is how the panels look once soldered in:

And how it looks installed:

Please note... if you have a florescent in there chances are high that you do not have the proper inverter and possibly are missing the wiring from the PCB to the panel... since you have a 1 slot in there chances are high that the wiring is missing. You have a lot more to locate than just the A6 panels if this is the case. I was lucky, my cabinet came with the original panels and all equipment but they were burned out and the inverter was disconnected...
