I just fired up kangaroo in MAME. I haven't played it since '82 and I liked it then, of course I was 7 years old.

Man that game doesn't hold up at all. What a stinker!

Same goes for Space Invaders and Pong!

...but Space Invaders has a bit more legs from the cabinet vs. Pong and Kangaroo. It's still a shallow game, but the black light and the fake depth created by the mirror and the cardboard moon...the faking of color on a BW monitor...the raised lettered metal plate that they believed was futuristic back then...the art work...if you gotta play SI once, for fuck's sake, let it be on an original cabinet.

I will argue that SI is much deeper than people give it up to be. Just go get 300 points for that ship every time and then say its a boring repetitive game.

you used mame, what do you expect?

I expect a near perfect emulation of many of the older arcade games, including games I have never seen, or those I am never likely to see in person ever again. Every time I run MAME, I find something new.

I expect MAME to be a spot-on reference for just about any game I can think to look up. What was the resolution, the monitor orientation, scan frequency, what CPU did it use, CPU speed, was the game cloned by another company? MAME is the best video arcade game reference source in existence, and is relied upon by most arcade information websites (including KLOV).

I expect to be able to load up my favorite games just about anywhere and anytime, and have fun playing them. No, it isn't quite the same as the original machine, but it is still fun. And with the proper monitor, controls and cabinet, it *can* be the same as the original machine, as the emulation on some games is so good as to be indistinguishable from the original. The popularity of the rather badly done N-in-1 boards shows that.

But mostly, I expect a lot of fun from MAME.

Except maybe from Kangaroo.

A lot of the classics don't quite "hold up" by today's standards.
Take Tron for example. BEAUTIFUL CAB, the game is fun enough. Play it on Mame, it would be weak at best. Play it on a dedicated cab, and say it sucks, well you are not a true KLOVer.

Most older games suck on MAME because they rely on the tricks of the cab to enhance the experience. More modern games that you can place in a generic Dynamo can translate much better.

I think you guys got me wrong. MAME isn't the fault here. Kangaroo's game play is weak it wouldn't matter if it were a real cabinet.

It is no Donkey Kong, Galaga, Pac-Man, Mr. Do! Etc.

It is dull. It was a favorite as a kid, but now it doesn't compare to the ones I named above and tons of other games.

I just don't have the game, so I thought I would give it a play since I haven't in so long.

I bet it has been 30 years since I have played the game.
Your probably right, it will suck. BUT, I am guessing it would suck less on a dedicated cab....

Asteroids Deluxe is another good example. No blacklight or mirror effects in Mame. Mame is good for what it is though.

I still get a little flack about selling my SI game.
How SI was played here.
Clear a Row the crowd cheers and the player takes a shot.
Next person in line.
Clear a Row the crowd cheers and the player takes a shot.
This goes on until the screen clears
Then they all take a shot and cheer.

Meh..there are really no "tricks" in a Kangaroo cab. Both Kangaroo and Arabian totally suck.

Its also pretty straight forward emulation wise; no special controller or button config.

Just total suckness.

EDIT: The best thing about Kangaroo is when it's converted to an Arkanoid.

Oh the HATE!! lol.

As a owner of both Arabian and Kangaroo, well I'd say yer all wrong.. lovely little games, with still alot of fun left in them..

I really never cared for Kangaroo, ever. Even when I played when I was little... it didn't hold my attention.

Arabian, on the other hand, is pure awesomeness! It definitely has one of the 'better' cab sideart out there. The thing that pissed me off about this game was the control scheme. Why oh why is there not a jump button! I despise games that incorporate movement AND jumping on the joystick! Blah!!!!
