hi all...ok i did it again and bought another game to add to the small but growing collection. this time i picked up a very nice dedicated Mortal Kombat from Craigslist for $200.00 its in amazing condition but will have all the art work replaced eventually because of fading. The monitor is beautiful and crisp with no burn in and the whole game plays just like i remember it from back in the day. now to my questions. FIRST how do i set it to free play? i managed to google and find out how to do it for my playchoice 10 but cant seem to find this info out. SECOND is the sound. when i got it it had -0- volume at all when i got it home and got the coin door open i found the volume knob and turned it all the way up and now i can hear it but its really faint...speakers maybe?? and last who makes the best side art and the control panel overlay and the control panel box art as well? Thanks all for taking the time to comment!

lots of threads about these questions, awesome score tho.

Download the manual from klov or another manual archive, it will have dip switch settings that you will have to adjust for free play. (dip switch bank 2: sw 2,3,and 4 should be in the on position)

http://www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/M/Mortal_Kombat_1_1640025101_July_1992.pdf

Sound issue could be a number of things, I'd have to see what the wiring to the soundboard looks like. tho it could just be a dirty connector, failing sound board (doubtful but it happens), or failing sound pot (volume knob).

The side art you can get from ThisOldGame.com and the CPO as well as box art will soon be available as well.

bet your son loves the bajeebus out of this one.

thanks for the info....i havent mastered the search feature yet on here. OH YEA does he. i managed to get it home and inside before him and his cousin came home from school today and there mouths hit the floor! i love the fact that this is a game we both can enjoy while kicking each others ass at the same time!! thanks again.

The dipswitch settings are different between the T-Unit and Y-Unit. You will have to determine which main board you have to find out the correct dipswitch settings to make it free play. You should be able to simply google T-Unit and y-Unit to see pics, or you could post a pic of your main board here and we could tell you for sure.

As for the sound, as long as your sound board has power and is attached to the main board via the ribbon cable, you SHOULD be able to hear the game without a volume pot but it's VERY weak. If you don't hear the sound/speakers 'crackle' when adjusting it/them, then I would suspect that the pot is bad or not hooked up. Again, if you ca shoot a pic of the sound board's connections, we should be able to get you all fixed up.

Nice score!

ok im in free play mode! i didnt realize there was a on screen dip program to actually show you what each is for....sweet! Now for the sound. yes its all hooked uop and the ribbon cables are connected. i have sound its just very faint. what do you guys thing it is?

I was thinking that but didn't look into it, but just now i checked my t-unit manual and it is the same.

Strange. I could be wrong, but I thought that they were different because I have about 8 of the T-Unit manuals but none for the Y-Unit and when I try and make changes to the Y-units based on the T-Unit manuals, the changes didn't work. Oh well.

looks like switch 1 and switch 8 on bank 2 are the only ones that are different (atleast according to my manuals). other than the comic book add option on the T unit at bank 1 switches 5-8.

switch 1 on the Y unit controls Coin A (w/e that means) and switch 8 is not used.

while on the t unit switch 1 is DIP Switch or cmos coinage and switch 8 is "test switch" game mode/test mode.

ok here are some pictures i took of the boards and one of the pot switch. i wasnt sure exactly what you guys wanted to see. if this aint it let me know. thanks guys!

that's a y-unit, the manual i linked is the one for that board. that volume pot looks a bit crusty. wouldn't hurt replacing. you can also try wiping it a few times with the machine off. (turn it from max to minimum a few times) that might clean it up.

ok ill try that and if it doesnt do anything ill just pop a new one in and see what happens. How can you tell its a Y-board? also this cabinet is a jamma cabinet right? i have a soul edge board thats a jamma and wondered if it would pop in there and work. of course it would never be permantly in there or the cabinet ever changed but i was just curious how the jamma stuff worked

Every Jamma game is compatible with every Jamma cabinet (in theory). The Jamma harness will support all functionality of the board and 3 buttons. The buttons that will work with your Soul Edge board will be HP, BLK, and HK.

Ok so today i replaced the coin door lights and they work great. i also replaced the volume pot and it did nothing to cure the weak sound issue i have. Now what do you guys think i should check to get it working right?

Sounds like your sound board might have died. Could be any number of things. The amp could have crapped out or it's not getting the right amount of power. In all my experience, when you can hear the game sounds and your only problem is volume, then it's got to be pot-related. It's not a guarantee, but that's where I'd start troubleshooting.

After replacing the pot, assuming you installed the new one correctly, make sure the wires from the pot run all the way to the connection on the sound board. Check the connection for corrosion or other possible contaminants. You can see if the board is good by jumpering the wires that go to the volume pot, essentially shorting them together. That will make the sound board think you've turned the pot all the way up. If that does not work, then you have an issue with your sound board and may need a new one. If it DOES work, then you have an issue with the pot still. The wires should be on the middle and right connection if I'm not mistaken.

I have extras if it comes to that. I can hook you up.

using the manual check the sound board to see that it's getting power. (12v and 5v) (might as well test the 5v at the powersupply and most importantly at the board while your at it, you want about 5.1v at the board (at a chip preferably)).

have you tried another board in the cab to make sure that the speakers or the wiring to them isn't the issue as well?

Have you used the diagnostic test in the test menu for the soundboard?

just some other easy checks for you.

also have you reseated the connectors on both the main and sound boards as they could have some oxidation/corrosion causing an issue.

Can you open the back of the cabinet and get an unobstructed shot of the sound pcb? There was something I had to do to my Y-unit pcb in a dedicated cab to get the sound working right. Just want to see if yours is the same.

here are the pictures you asked for. also there is a plug hanging when i open the coin door that i cant seem to find where it should go...any ideas?
