Two RAM replaced to get it running again. Game plays and sounds just fine.

However, I now have (in some words) a SPACE where "A" should be, a "D" where "E" should be and a "V" where "W" should be. "Earwig" looks fine in this pic but it shifts from "E" to "D" as the earwig itself goes from the top to bottom of its little area, for example. The V and W rapidly change nonstop if that helps.

The info here from Spaeth is good but he kinda loses me when explaining how the grid translation works:

From what I can glean from that thread, it looks like each problem graphic is moving "one spot back" on the grid.

Voltages are spot on. I've eliminated all ROMs by using a Multipede kit. I've replaced the 273 at R4. Looked again and again for broken or jumped traces on the board to no avail.
