So I'm sick of crappy tools and read on another thread that the Aoyue 701A+ is a good way to go for both soldering and desoldering. I can't find the thing in stock anywhere besides ebay where some guy has them for 194 and 90 shipping (!).

Anyone know of a place that might have them in stock for a decent price?

most things point to this site:

http://store.sra-solder.com/product.php/6369/0 where they are out of stock.

I don't see it available anywhere else either. Maybe a newer model has replaced it?

At this price, you are getting fairly close to buying A Hakko 936 Soldering Station and a Hakko 808 Desoldering Gun (usually about $75 and $175), which are better tools. The Aoyues are knockoffs of the Hakko stuff. I have the Aoyue 2702 (adds hotair gun to the 701), and the soldering iron feels really cheap compared to the Hakko. The gun works fine, but the 808 is better (and portable).

Just something to keep in mind before paying that price with shipping.

I will rephrase my question I guess. Or rather ask a new one:

If I have a budget of $200 or less and want a good soldering station and desoldering setup.. What should I get?

Pace (not the kind that have the 110v plugs on the irons!)... Weller... Hakko... there are a lot of great brands out there.

To find the best pricing you should search eBay a couple of times a day and be prepared to pull the trigger on a system that someone lists with a low buy-it-now price.

For $200 I'd go with the Hakko 808 and get either a basic Weller iron with a decent tip, or find a used Weller soldering station.

that plus i'f you're getting a solder station, get a temp controlled station that will take small conical, medium and large chisel tips for the various tasks. si=ometimes you need lotsa heat for large pcb pads/areas or wires, other times a fine tip for delicate pcb traces.
