We've previously prevented people from spoofing accounts by changes in punctuation in a username and a few other things, but not this. It's on the schedule tomorrow to update the systems to not allow someone to register a new username that is too confusing similar to a new one with these letter combinations: "i" (eye) vs "1" (one) vs "l" (elle), and "0" (zero) vs "O" (oh).
It's an endless battle. We killed another scammer account today that also (like this user) made the PayPal donation, except the other account wasn't trying to misspell an existing one so was even sneakier.
Two years ago scammer accounts were pretty rare. Now since they have embraced bots to help them sign up, we delete between 5,000 and 10,000 of them a year before they even get to post on the forums.
We are looking at other things things to discourage trouble, but it's an endless battle. I bet AI isn't going to make the battle easier.
