My Solar Fox cabaret had been down for a few months and I finally just got around to fixing it the other day. Since it's now up and running I've been putting a bunch of games on it. But damn is this game tough!

I'm curious what types of strategies others have for this game. I always play with 3 lives (vs selecting 5 from the start), and also go with the fast speed selection.

I'm trying to break 100k, but haven't gotten there yet. It just gets so brutal around the 10th level. What are the good players doing? Are you lingering on each level, shooting the enemies along the edges over and over for small points and to freeze them? Or are you just flying through levels as quickly as possible? There is very little talk about this game out there, and very few videos on YouTube.

Speaking of strategy talk, I really thought Klov used to have a gameplay/strategy category. I didn't see it though. Regardless, I think it would be a good category to have.

Anyways, any good Solar Fox players out there?

The top 5 scores at Twin Galaxies were all set in 1983, with the 6th in 1982. As such there's no video for those. The top 2 are over 1 million. However, the top WolfMAME score is over 2 million and there is video of it:

Sheee-it. I'm 52 and still have never laid eyes on that cabinet. It's one I've skipped in MAME to wait for first play on the real deal.

Oh man, it's been years and years since I last used MAME. I remember I used to download some videos from the MARP site to watch some world records, but I totally forget how to do that. I just checked the MARP website and they have a "how to watch" section, but seems super confusing. Is there a better guide out there anywhere? I'd love to check out the 2 million MAME score.

Never mind, I figured out how to do it again. Went onto my old computer with MAME and downloaded the INP file, and played it back. If anyone else wants to watch the 2.2 million game it does work that way (I couldn't get any sound though). I watched him play up until around 300k. He also selected the fast speed selection. He doesn't linger at all, and is getting the "skip a rack" a lot as well. One thing he does different is he is constantly firing to complete a row of the things you collect on the screen, which obviously reduces the amount of time he's spending on each level. I find myself just running over all of those (vs shooting them), and firing only to freeze the enemies along the edges, as well as to remove the swirl things that make you stop & spin for a second. Besides that, he does freeze the enemies A LOT, and is just superior at avoiding their fire.

Anyways, I kind of answered my initial question, but thanks for the suggestion of watching the mame record, I wouldn't have thought of doing that. Although if anyone has any additional insight on the game and strategy I'd be interested in hearing it!

Maybe if I get around to it I can screen record the mame record and share it with anyone else that wants to watch it.

Hope this helps anyone else who's interested.

- Always complete each stage as fast as possible. Skip-a-rack = more points than trying to press.
- Always be firing.

That's really all there is to it. Memorize the patterns for the bonus rounds and over time build a sense of how the enemies move. (Not different from most games in that regard.)

I absolutely need to hit CAX, and Banning. Here's hoping that chance comes next year.

100% this. Once i realized you should always be firing, that helps a lot in the faster levels.
