so I've brought home a COMPLETE Tempest (finally)

As for checking the AC ripple on the DC line, just put your Meter to AC, and measure across the cap. You are looking for something around .03, if it starts reading upwards to .1 you start getting problems.

As for checking the reset button. It's just a switch. You'll see the two large solder lugs on the back side of the board. Just make sure it reads continuity when closed, and open when not.

As for skimping on the wheel alignment after getting new tires. If the old tire wear measure even, yeah I don't get an alignment. If I replace Ball joints, then yeah I get an alignment.

That's where you get into Predictive Maintenance Vs. Preventive Maintenance Vs. Repair.

One thing I always do on any Tempest is clean and reflow those header pins between boards. They always have cold solder and need to be done before you go digging into more complex issues.

Step 1: Wash the dust and crud off with flux remover and a brush tip

Step 2: Reflow solder to all the pins

Step 3: Heat and remove the solder you just applied; why? because the new flux and solder will aid in removing the old stuff with less heat

Step 4: Reflow the pins with fresh solder and wash all the flux off

That's really the only right way to do it, you can shortcut and just reflow solder, but if you have a really bad joint, you're likely to end up with a contaminated weak new joint.

Thanks Mike, I will add all that to the list!

AMEN! Another skilled motorhead! :D :D :D

You'll have to excuse Bungy, he drives one of those little things with the "H" on the back.. LOL

VG, you're not going to go against Bob Roberts, are you??!!!

I think challenging Bob Roberts' expertise is an immediate ban from KLOV, isn't it? :D

If it will please the Council here, I'll order the blasted big blue. I just hate replacing parts that aren't broke, especially when my current life budget really doesn't allow for this hobby at all anymore!

Order an A/R II rebuild kit while you're at it...

:D

I just emailed Bob for the big blue. I will try that first.

Even worse, a little gremlin in my head is saying "Pssst- you just got a new big BLACK from Bob Roberts in June for the Asteroids machine.. Pull that one out and see if it cures Tempest!!!!"

If I do that though my wife will probably castrate me (she loves Asteroids).

180,000 miles (150k mine) and it still runs like the day I bought it. Also, it was built in the USA with American (non-union ;)) labor.

I guess I'm not good at making car analogies though.

It may have been built in the USA, but the money you paid for it went back to the company's Emperor, not to those workers.. (I'll stop there so this thread doesn't get moved over to the Political bucket) It may also be due for a new big blue.. :D

The tempest I currently own would not run without a new big blue but it also had bad rams and blown transistors in the hv section of the monitor so it wasn't a cure all solution. From experience just measure the voltages from the arii rebuilding it is probably a waste of time if it works. All the failures could have resulted from the big blue failing but it was actually the last thing I replaced as I was testing the monitor and boards in another machine to get them all fixed. First reflow the interconnect with new solder. Reseat all the chips. Rebuild the monitor and then check all the voltages. If all is well then try it out.

Try cleaning and reseating all the chips on the boards; As well as reseating and cleaning the edge connectors. I was having the same issue as you, now it fires right up! Good luck!

That would be so great. Hopefully I can tinker with it some more tonight.

Nice score!..I too plan to someday have a Tempest upright..sitting right next to my StarTrek(Tempest)...and maybe a Tempest to MajorHavok conversion there as well to complete the row.....

Yeah, I had never played Tempest before playing the one at DogP's a month or so ago. That game is bad ass!
