...huge project, so many pictures, but...

I realized if I try to make the "perfect" thread it is never going to get done and...

Everyone on KLOV has seen a million restores and no one really gives a shit so...

Check out my game! I couldn't be happier.

Looks great man! The nice thing about having a restored Gauntlet is not having a Gauntlet to restore! Those things are a beast!

Dude, great job! Can't wait to check it out in person.

You should add some more pics and describe in detail the challenges you went through. You know we're all whores for that stuff...

Thanks everyone - really appreciate the positive feedback - it really was a HUGE job and...

Glad it is done - having a great time playing (not working on) it!

Well since you asked...

Ha ha.

Absolutely, I will start going through the whole process and posting pics.

So I found this game through KLOV - I can't remember if it was through VAPS or and older FS post but I reached out to member crassvw asking if the project cab was still available. He said that it was and we starting talking about putting together a deal. These were the first photos I got of the game...

Crassvw and I got a price worked out and Jawhn was nice enough to offer to bring the game from AZ to the Pinball Museum in Banning.

When all was said and done it turned out the coindork was the driver and Jawhn was riding shotgun.

I went out to Banning to get the game on February 19th (2019) and we were having a pretty serious "winter storm" (CA style) - it was pouring rain - just awful.

Long story short: I had been having good luck with moving games in my Kia Soul but though I thought I could squeeze Gauntlet my car we couldn't get it to fit - so back home I went and coindork graciously offered to help deliver my game the next day. I drove back out to Banning and we got the game loaded and did a quick run out to my place to drop it off - weather was MUCH better.

Let's get into this restore.

True confessions here - I am not good with projects...

I don't have a lot of space and I simply cannot walk by a dirty, filty, nasty game every day with out finally losing my mind and starting to clean and tear the game down.

This means that every time I acquire a game, whether I like it or not, it moves right to the front of the line and I go nuts working on it until the OCD settles down - ha!

I think I lasted about 24 hours before I started working on this one :)

First thing I did was to remove every piece of metal (everything was covered with blue paint) and started cleaning everything that was left in the game.

I am really big fan of the using the rock tumbler (I have a Lortone) so I put everything I could in the tumbler get it as clean as I could. Many times the tumbler doesn't come into play until I de-rust - I either use vinegar (and sun/heat) or I am big fan of Evapo-rust from O'Reilly Auto Parts.

And right in front of a box fan after I rinse it off (thx andrewb)

Here's a look at the power supply - I really tried to break down everything as far as it would go to get it in the tumbler.

Here are some photos of the replacement leg levelers - the bottom of the cab was a mess (no great shock there). Really like these leg levelers - super heavy duty. There is another thread about these:

https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=445846

I feel good about the way these are attached - game is rock solid.

Big lesson I learned here: when you've got the cab stripped and are working on the bottom, now is the time to get out the bondo and fix any and all imperfections. I did none, them some later, and I wish I had just perfectly repaired the bottom at the outset. Next time I won't make that mistake (looking your direction Mario Bros. widebody).

Also - interesting cabinet in that there was no way to get the back leg levelers in the exact same spot (without tearing the cab apart)so, I had to move them forward a bit. Game is rock solid but would have loved to have put them in the exact same place.

Enjoy!
