So, I have about the same amount of time on "Attack from Mars" & "Revenge from Mars"

...and I think I like them equally.

When I bought Revenge, I was sure that, although I loved it, I didn't love it as much as Attack. (At that time I had spent more time with Attack.) But now, after having about the same amount of play-time on both, I no longer feel that way. I absolutely love them both, and at this point, I can't really declare one to be better than the other.

Despite the drastic changes with the Pin2K platform, I find both machines to be extremely similar, and am really confused by the people who love Attack but simply HATE Revenge.

They have similar modes, but what people think is that the pin2K platform is smaller, which in most cases is not 100% correct. HOWEVER, IIRC, AFM was the same size as T2, which is 46". The RFM pf is 43", which can seem like a big difference when playing a game. Add to that some of the playfield is obscured by the monitor, and you have people think it's tiny.

AFM has longer shots (at least to me).

The games are quite different, but do have many similar features.

I like both, but my pocketbook only allowed me to get RFM :)

Interesting. NEver knew there were different LENGTHS of playfield too, but I guess that makes sense. New meaning of "deep" pins, lol.

That's a great pic. Wouldn't have guessed High Speed's playfield to be about the same as Revenge. Wow.

I hear ya. I, of course, would still love to have an Attack, but like so many other Bally/Williams games now, it's priced out-of-reach.

I think the knock on p2k length isn't so much that the pf is short, it's that it plays short. That is to say you hit the ball 3/4 the way up and it disappears into darkness. Repeat, repeat, repeat. That sounds negative but I liked RFM.

Yep. I concur except for the "ButI liked RFM" part.

If you can't declare AFM better than RFM then I will ask you what mental hospital you currently are committed to.

I own AFM and have played RFM a lot also, but I must say I like AFM better. However, I still wouldn't mind having a RFM in the line up someday.

I own both. The RFM does get more love by my party guest who are just the average non-pinball playing people.

AFM is a much better game than RFM.

I do like the fact that I can swap out the RFM playfield and play my SWEP1 quickly. Pinball 2000 was a neat idea.

I'm just not seeing this Grand Canyon size difference in gameplay between the two games...so I guess I am crazy as all get-out. :jester2:

Whatever the case, I love 'em both...and to me at least, my collection feels vastly more awesome with RfM in it. :D

Call me crazy I guess, but there's no way I would trade my RFM for an AFM, even for even money. Better art, better sound, deeper gameplay. Yeah the ball disappears, but you know it's coming back, and where. It's certainly no worse than TZ in that regard. And the Mystery Modes are awesome!! I love getting Alien Autopsy.

I'd trade you all the RFM's you want for AFM's! :)

Deeper gameplay? I disagree. AFM has 6 attack waves, Martian attack mulitball, strobe multi ball, and 5-way combo, super jackpot, total annihilation, and super jets objectives. Stroke of luck is a very satisfying shot... and the video mode is one of the best. Rule the universe just kicks ass also. AFM has a better pinball layout also, a sweet orbit shot, two ramp shots, center drop bank target/saucer attack, and of course the side martian targets.

While I think RFM is a cool game, and since I love AFM so much the theme is very appealing, as a player I find RFM just too one dimensional for my personal tastes. I was actually ready to pull the trigger on one about a year ago, and went over to the guys house and played it for about an hour, which changed my mind.

That being said, I will one day have a RFM in my collection.. but consider it a machine that I would probably trade away after some time.. while my AFM will never leave my collection for several reasons (the restoration that prok did on it being one).

Either way, they are both enjoyable machines and pinball just kicks ass! :)

I love a good gentleman's disagreement! The main objective in RFM is to collect missiles, weapons and saucer lights to "Attack Mars". If you ignore those objectives and just smack the ball around until the center ramp raises, it's pretty boring. Sady, I see most people doing just that.

> AFM has 6 attack waves
RFM has 8, plus 4 "Mystery Modes"

> Martian attack multiball, strobe multiball
RFM has SEVEN different multiball modes. Hypnobeam is very similar to Strobe, but without the epilepsy risk :)

> and 5-way combo, super jackpot, total annihilation, and super jets objectives.
There are no combos in RFM that I'm aware of, but you have to make a lot of specific shots to complete modes with a "Flawless" rating.

> Stroke of luck is a very satisfying shot... and the video mode is one of the best.
SOL is in the same position on RFM, just a shorter distance. And I won't begin to compare RFM and AFM on video modes. RFM totally destroys AFM here. :)

> Rule the universe just kicks ass also.
Agreed, same with "Attack Mars".

> AFM has a better pinball layout also, a sweet orbit shot,
The layouts are pretty much identical except for the playfield length. RFM has 2 great loop shots, but they need to be enabled in the software or else they get blocked. They also take more skill to handle on RFM, because they come back faster.

> two ramp shots,
RFM has 2 great ramp shots, plus the jump ramp. What makes the jump ramp challenging is that you sometimes have to avoid it if you want to finish out the mode with a Flawless (saucer light).

> center drop bank target/saucer attack,
Right, RFM doesn't have those.

> and of course the side martian targets.
Check.

> Either way, they are both enjoyable machines and pinball just kicks ass!
I totally agree, I just don't understand the $2000 price difference. I would expect it to swing the other way ($5000 for RFM, $3000 for AFM).
